Today we’d like to introduce you to Yuri Houston.
Yuri, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have lived in Tokyo since I graduated from high school. When I was little, I lived in the countryside of Japan.
After graduating from fashion academy, I worked at a rockabilly shop for four years. I went to many rockabilly events and fell in love with the music, clothing and culture.
And I started making vintage style dresses, but I could not live without just making a dress, so I worked as a pattern marker as well.
I’ve had many experiences as a salesperson, designer and pattern maker in Japan.
After I moved to LA, I started to make Tshirts.
Then, afterwards, I started to focus on drawing about nine years ago.
Recently I’ve started collaborating with artists that I love.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I came to the US from Japan with very little knowledge of English, so language has definitely been a constant challenge for me.
I’m getting better and have been very lucky to have the support of my amazing partner.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Mischief Made – what should we know?
We make vintage-inspired tee shirts, cardigans, and accessories. I design, control production, and manage our social media.
Each artist we work with has their own unique worldview. By supporting that and cultivating it, we’ve been able to produce clothing that has a distinct flavor; a look that our fans recognize right away and get excited about.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The most important thing is just to keep going, keep creating, keep motivated. Problems work themselves out eventually if you just keep hammering at it.
