Today we’d like to introduce you to Yumi Han.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up, I was told that I would never amount to anything. When you hear something so often, you almost start to believe it yourself. At the risk of sounding cliché, there was always something inside of me telling me that there was more to life than what I had, so I was determined to find a way out.
When I was 19 years old, I was approached by an Army recruiter who offered me a new family, a new home, and a new life. No one took me seriously when I started to entertain the idea about joining the service, but I did and I never looked back. During my ten years as a member of the military community, I served my country, got married, had two beautiful young girls, got divorced, and earned an MSW from the University of Southern California. All things, I believe I could have not done or experienced if the recruiter never approached me 15 years ago. The Army taught me how to be a professional, set expectations, and forced me to push my own limits.
As I started my career, I was diagnosed with a form of Tourettes, called motor tics. I struggled daily with extreme anxiety, which led to the exacerbation of my involuntary tics. I desperately tried to find some relief from my symptoms, but the side effects of the medication my doctor prescribed were too heavy. So, I did what I did best…I pushed through.
My whole life, I pushed and fought to be the opposite of what I believed everyone expected of me. I was so busy fighting all the time, that I forgot to take care of the most important person in my life, Me. In my world, self-care was never an option, so the concept of self-care was new when I was in graduate school working towards my Master’s Degree. Back then, the idea of self-care felt more like a privilege, but today I view self-care as a necessary part of my survival.
I’ve always had a curious personality, so when I started to explore the world of self-care, I became completely obsessed. I got lost in the world of aromatherapy, mindfulness, and the healing powers of crystals. It was only natural that I started dabbling with Cannabidiol (CBD).
Since 2016, I’ve studied and researched herbalism and the effects of Cannabinoids on the human body. The more I learned about herbalism and the various types of Cannabinoids the more fascinated I became in the synergy of the ingredients of my own blends.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome
Trying to balance a full-time job, being a single parent, going to soccer games, and starting a new business was not easy. Eventually, I started to burn out, but one day I was offered a partnership opportunity. My partnership gave me access to an entire team of professionals in marketing, branding and manufacturing , which made my life so much easier!
As a team, the most stressful part of creating a product was the packaging. We wanted to make sure we were not only being compliant, but also setting the standard on informative packaging for CBD infused products. We wanted our packaging to be fun and informative. Unfortunately, the more you write on your packaging means more chances of errors. In the end, we ended up recycling our first set of packaging due to minor errors, it was an expensive mistake!
Personally, the biggest challenge I faced, was myself. As I was formulating my own CBD infused sleeping face mask with the chemist on our team, I became overly critical of myself. I kept doubting my own decisions, because I was scared of what other people might think of my product. I probably drove my chemist crazy with all the changes, but in the end I took his advice, and ended up going with my gut, and I’m glad I did.
My intention was to create an all natural, sleeping face mask for people on the go, like me. I’m constantly dealing with acne, redness and dry patches on my face, so I wanted to make sure my product addressed all of my concerns. Honestly, I don’t have the patience, nor the time to complete the Korean 10-step skin care routine so I created a highly reparative, healing product, full of antioxidants and vitamins to work on my skin while I slept.
If you frequently deal with acne or are worried about sun damage, this is the product for you. The best part of my CBD infused sleeping face mask is that it works for all skin types, and I’m pretty sure everyone can benefit from a product that is gentle enough for the most sensitive skin, yet also powerful enough to heal and nourish your skin, while you sleep.
VOLŪM CBD – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As the CEO and co-founder of Volūm, it was important to me that we create a line of products that promote not only self-care but mental wellness. When you purchase one of our products, you can trust that each product is all-natural, 100% THC Free, lab tested, and made with NO artificial colors, fragrances, or preservatives.
Our products were intentionally made to serve a therapeutic purpose, and although each product is enhanced with CBD, it is not the only star ingredient. As an organization, we believe in the power of synergy when it comes to our carefully selected ingredients. This means, we don’t just create products solely to carry CBD, we make an already great product, even better by infusing it with the powerful benefits of CBD.
As a company, I am most proud that our products are affordably priced, and that we are still able to contribute to the organizations that mean the most to us. When you purchase a product from Volūm, you are not only helping military service members and their families, but also raising awareness around mental health.
A portion of our sales are donated to the following organizations:
1. San Gabriel Valley National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) an organization. dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness
2. United Services Organization (USO), an organization that I have personally benefited from during my time in the military. The USO is a. military support organization that supports military service members and military families.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I am most proud of my team. I had a dream, but they made helped turn my dream into a reality. They trusted my vision and executed a dream that I could’ve never achieved alone. Every member has made their own set of sacrifices to launch Volūm, and for that, I am forever grateful.
