Yiyang Sang

Yiyang Sang’s journey in the field of architecture and interior design has been marked by a passion for innovation, a commitment to sustainable practices, and a diverse range of experiences across different firms and projects.

Yiyang embarked on his architectural journey at the University of Liverpool in the UK, where he pursued his undergraduate and first master’s degree studies. Following this, he graduated from SCI-Arc, M-Arch II program, also serving as a speaking guest in Harvard University graduate school of Design. This academic exposure laid the foundation for his future career.

During the gap year in 2017, Yiyang entered the professional realm of architecture, gaining valuable experience at Atelier Deshaus in Shanghai and later at B+U Architecture in Los Angeles. Concurrently, he was involved with MAKE Architecture, where he got acquainted with various project types, including restaurant, hospitality, and office projects. These experiences exposed him to the entire project lifecycle, from initiation to completion.

In 2022, Yiyang achieved LEED AP BD+C certification, showcasing his commitment to sustainable design practices. This certification aligns with his passion for creating innovative and functional spaces, making him an asset to any team.

Currently, Yiyang joined RIOS, LA and he is on the path to obtaining an AIA architect license, a significant milestone in his professional journey. He is driven by a quest for inspiration at the intersection of modern architectural design, emerging technology, and social-cultural trends, highlighting his forward-thinking approach to the field. Yiyang Sang stands as a testament to the fusion of academic rigor, professional experience, and a continuous pursuit of innovation in the dynamic realm of architecture and interior design.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being an architect is never a smooth road. One of the initial challenges was transitioning from academic studies to professional practice. Navigating the complexities of real-world projects and understanding the nuances of design documentation as an architectural designer posed a learning curve.

Moving beyond the theoretical aspects of architectural design taught in academic settings, I had to grapple with the intricacies of translating concepts into tangible, executable plans. This involved understanding the technical aspects of construction drawings, detailing, and the practical considerations that come into play during the execution of architectural projects.

This transition, however, laid the groundwork for my future endeavors.

We’ve been impressed with X-Atelier, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In addition to my current position as an architectural designer at RIOS, I also embarked on an entrepreneurial journey by founding X-Atelier in early 2020. X-Atelier is a small but dynamic architectural and construction firm, and we take immense pride in our specialization in single-family residence design and small office facility projects.

At X-Atelier, our forte lies in the meticulous design of local residential projects, paying careful attention to the unique needs of each client. We specialize in bringing out the distinctive character of single-family residences, ensuring that every detail is thoughtfully considered. Our commitment to precision and personalized design sets us apart in the industry.

One aspect that makes X-Atelier stand out is our deep connection to the local community. Based in San Bernardino County, CA, we understand the nuances of the region, and this local expertise is reflected in our designs. We take pride in contributing to the architectural landscape of our community, creating spaces that seamlessly blend with the local environment while meeting the needs of modern living.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Architects often get engrossed in their own projects, which, while essential, can limit exposure to broader trends and innovations in the industry. To find a mentor and build a network, it’s crucial to look beyond the confines of your workspace. Attend industry events, seminars, and conferences where you can engage with professionals who are pushing the boundaries of innovation. This not only broadens your perspective but also opens up opportunities to connect with experienced individuals who can guide you in your career.

Networking isn’t limited to architects alone. Engaging with fellow designers in the industry and even contractors during construction administration phases can be immensely beneficial. Collaborating with professionals from different facets of a project provides valuable insights and widens your network. Architects often work in tandem with various stakeholders, and understanding their perspectives can be enlightening. Don’t underestimate the knowledge you can gain from those who contribute to the built environment in different capacities.
