Meet Yessenia Diaz of Touched Hair Studio in Downey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yessenia Diaz.

Yessenia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all started in 2009 when I graduated beauty school. My very first job as a stylist was in a hair salon located in downtown Downey CA. I started as an assistant, my job included washing hair, blow drying, styling, prepping and cleaning the salon. Soon after I became a stylist on commission. That lasted about five years and in 2014 decided I was ready for a change.

I was confident I had enough clientele to booth rent and although I was very comfortable and was very sad to leave I venture on to Frida hair studio also located in Downey CA. Where I grew and started building a name for myself. During my time at Frida hair studio, I met many beautiful people that help me step out of my comfort zone. I always knew I wanted to open my very own hair salon but didn’t know when was the right time. So instead I started working long hours, increased my marketing on social media and started saving money as much as I could. It was very difficult for me to balance my dream and being a mother. But I was very determined.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One thing about being a mother and trying to pursue a dream is that I would always question myself if I was being a good mother. Luckily I had my family supporting and helping me. Long hours at work and only one day off was very tiring physically and mentally. But this is what makes it wonderful.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Touched Hair Studio – what should we know?
While my time at Frida hair studio I was given the opportunity to open my very own sola salon studio. It was very exciting yet nerve-racking. I knew this is what I wanted since the very beginning so, of course I took the challenge and decided to open “Touched Hair Studio”. This is my very first year as an owner and it has been blissful. I have an amazing clientele, always willing to try new hair colors, styles, products and always want to see me succeed. I’m very blessed and always amazed of the tremendous love and support they give me. Touched Hair Studio is very unique I offer services by appointment only which allows me to give my clients a very personalize relaxing experience.

From balayage, ombre, highlights, haircutting, styling, and bridal hairstyles. I give each person a different experience/style base on their personality. When they walk into my studio they feel like they’re home. I love the connection we build. In the next five years, I hope to expand my studio and hire apprentices to start my team. I would like to teach them what I have learned throughout the years and help them grow as hairdressers. Hopefully, by this time work with a chemist and start my very own hair product line.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being able to walk into work and love what you I do. I have a tremendous passion for hairstyling, being able to enhance someones natural beauty and feel confident is everything and I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world.
