Today we’d like to introduce you to Yesenia Davis.
Yesenia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my career in high school 2006, signed up for a program called Tri Cities ROP for the cosmetology program using it as an elective for school. I’ve always loved styling hair never knowing I would turn my passion into a career. I was juggling high school and cosmetology course at the same time finally graduating in 2008. Both with a diploma and cosmetology state license. I trained for three years until I felt I needed to be on my own and start building my own clientele. I worked at various salons across LA area, struggling to find the right fit. At times considering to start a different passion. From Orange County to Beverly Hills where I finally felt I was performing my best in my own city of Whittier. Where I grew up and trained and where it started all. I currently work full time doing what I love in the city where I’ve lived all my life. I am an independent contractor in a hair salon where I am my own boss and make my own schedule and take care of my client’s hair needs independently.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There were a lot of times where I did reconsider being a hairstylist. To be able to get strangers to trust you with their hair is very difficult. It definitely took years to build a clientele and make income to live of off. It was a challenge to work with different types of personalities and salon environment. Until this very day, I still get difficult clients to work with. But I love a challenge and I love to give them the end result that they didn’t expect with their hair and make them happy. You definitely have to have a true passion and gift for the beauty industry because it can be cruel or difficult to survive until you feel you are truly established.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Yesenia Davis – what should we know?
I specialize in color and bridal work. I love being able to be part of a bride’s special day and making her feel beautiful. I emphasize on the bride and spend all day with her for hair retouches and hair style changes. Not only do I style her hair, if there’s anything a bride needs from me that I can help with, I go above and beyond. I also specialize is color. I’m an honest hairstylist I always give my professional opinion, not to just put money in my pocket but if a certain color is not possible I will not proceed with the service. The integrity of the hair is most important for me.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My family and friends have always been my number one supporters in my career. From the very beginning when I needed models and I was still in training they always gave a helping set of hair. My husband has always encouraged me to take risks and have fun doing what I love. No matter what direction or choice I make in regards to my career he’s never doubted me.
