Xochitl Isabel Cubero, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Pasadena, California. Since a very young age, I was drawn to science, medicine, wellness, helping people, and natural beauty. My parents were elementary school teachers in a medically underserved area of Los Angeles for 30 years so I had lots of exposure to the medically underserved and underinsured populations of Los Angeles. The negative impact health disparities and lack of medical access had on their students education and quality of life inspired me to pursue a career in medicine. I went to UC Irvine and received a Bachelor of Science from the University of California, Irvine. Afterwards, I attended The Keck School of Medicine of USC Primary Care Physician Assistant Program for my Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Practice. After graduating, I worked for five years in family medicine, providing quality primary care for the medically underserved populations of Los Angeles. I absolutely loved my experience as it was rewarding and impactful.
However, I felt a strong draw to dermatology and the world of beauty and aesthetic medicine. I see myself as a well rounded and multifaceted individual and knew that I had to explore this alternate passion of mine. I joined the talented team at Facile Dermatology + Boutique which is known for their natural approach to aesthetic medicine and focus on skin health. I also established myself as a medical influencer on Instagram sharing all things fitness, health, wellness, beauty, career, and lifestyle. I mentor the future generation of physician assistants- speaking to pre-PA student groups and providing one on one mentoring sessions to those considering the PA career. I continue to participate in the primary care world- I just completed a medical mission to rural India providing care to hundreds of patients in just a few days, some who had never seen a medical provider in their life before me.
Has it been a smooth road?
During my undergraduate education, I was on the pre-med route and found myself disillusioned with the process of applying to medical school and becoming a medical doctor. Once I learned about the PA career and made the switch to pursue a career that was better fit for my personality, skill sets, and goals I was motivated and got into my top choice- Keck USC School of Medicine. PA school itself is a rigorous experience but was one of the most fulfilling and transformative experiences of my life. My experience in family medicine was challenging but led to burnout due to limited resources, bureaucracy, noncompliant patients, physician shortages, and long hours. I did my best to maintain work-life balance during this trying time. Some of the most trying times involved personal- dissolution of relationships and deaths of loved ones. However, these are also the experiences that made me stronger and helped shape me into the resilient and empathetic person I am today.

Facile Dermatology + Boutique is a unique female founded company that is the brainchild of Danielle Nadick and Dr. Nancy Samolitis. They created a quality dermatology practice combined with a chic spa and curated skincare boutique. Everybody is enchanted by the interior design of our clinic. Patients instantly feel comfortable, at ease and confident in their choice of practice for their skin and aesthetic concerns. We specialize in a natural and conservative approach to aesthetic medicine. We also prioritize skin health. I help my patients age gracefully and work to maintain a natural, age appropriate aesthetic. I utilize injectables like botox or fillers to reverse wrinkles and volume loss. I also provide laser treatments and procedures such as microneedling to treat acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, and redness. Additionally, I treat medical dermatology complaints like acne, melasma, and rosacea. I enjoy tailoring skincare regimens with a brand agnostic and minimalist approach for patients. My patients trust me to help them achieve their most beautiful and healthiest skin. My patients truly appreciate my conservative approach to aesthetic medicine and look like the most refreshed version of themselves.
As for my side hustle as a medical influencer on Instagram- Instagram has been an unbelievable platform for me to share the things I love. I’ve been able to use my voice to educate the public about the growing physician assistant profession and use it as a channel to mentor the future of the PA profession. I have the opportunity to work with brands that align with my interests and expertise. It also provides a way to advertise my services and demonstrate a catalog of sorts with before and afters. It’s a method to educate the public on treatments and skincare. Ultimately, it gives me the opportunity to inspire people to prioritize wellness and live happier, healthier, and more beautiful lives.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles, specifically Pasadena has many options for aesthetic medicine and wellness influencers.
I do believe my conservative approach to aesthetic medicine is more difficult to find. The public is often afraid to explore aesthetic medicine due to the overdone and unnatural look that is commonly found in LA. There is also an abundance of medical spas that provide rushed, impersonal, and dishonest care. I take my time to get to know the patient and use honest and effective communication to formulate a plan with the patient to achieve a result that will make them healthier, content, and more confident.
Furthermore, there are a multitude of wellness influencers on Instagram but it is challenging to find someone that has an authentic voice that surpasses a perfectly curated feed and is a licensed medical provider. My followers appreciate the way I weave the topics of skincare, fitness, cosmetic dermatology, health, lifestyle, medicine, nutrition, and inspiration to live a healthier and happier life.
