Meet Winnie Puah of Ashbury CoCo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Winnie Puah.

Hi Winnie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
AshburyCo.Co started as a feeling before it was ever a brand — Where fashion meets celebration, and every moment becomes a cherished memory. I launched it in 2016, right after leaving a corporate fashion wholesale role in downtown LA. At the time, I was frustrated by the hyper-commercialization of children’s fashion. It felt like every brand was shouting louder rather than speaking with purpose.

The pivot came from a late-night sketch: a suit inspired by 1960s Americana, but built with modern, eco-conscious textiles. That sketch turned into our first prototype. I sourced materials locally, worked with independent sewers, and launched an Etsy store with just three pieces — all made to order.

Word spread faster than I expected. What started as a garage operation became a creative studio within six months. Our community resonated with the storytelling, the tactility of the pieces, and the transparency behind each stitch. Beyond aesthetics, AshburyCo.Co stands for intentional fashion — garments that hold memory but point ahead.

Today, we’ve graduated from Etsy, moved off from handmade platform and grown into a small but agile team, collaborating with manufacturers, textile innovators and social media trendsetters. We still produce in limited batches. That’s intentional. We don’t chase trends — we create continuity.

The journey’s been anything but linear, but every zigzag brought us closer to our identity: AshburyCo.Co is not just what you wear, it’s what you remember wearing.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road — and honestly, I don’t think it’s supposed to be.

When COVID hit in early 2020, we were in the early stages of planning AshburyCo.Co’s expansion out of Etsy. Supply chains froze, mills shut down, and our small vendor list suddenly became inaccessible. But the real shift came when we saw how hard-hit our communities were — especially essential workers and families who couldn’t find even basic protective equipment.

So, we paused everything.

We redirected our entire workspace and team to sew fabric masks. At the time, the fabric we had purchased for jackets and shirts became the source for thousands of washable masks.

That decision changed us.

It taught us that fashion can function — that it isn’t divorced from service. It also deepened our roots. Many people who discovered us through the mask initiative later became advocates for our brand. From that point forward, we built AshburyCo.Co not just as a fashion label, but as a community-aware design studio. Every piece we make now carries that same spirit of usefulness, care, and purpose.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
AshburyCo.Co is a design-led special occasions clothing label rooted in conscious craftsmanship, storytelling, and timeless utility. We’re specialized in limited-batch fashion pieces that blend vintage silhouettes with modern sensibilities. Every garment we create is designed to feel emotionally durable — something you’ll reach for again and again, not just because it fits well, but because it means something.

We’re known for our deep attention to detail — from custom-dyed fabrics to our signature double-stitched finishing and heritage-inspired cuts. But what truly sets us apart is the intention behind our process. We make everything in tight, responsibly managed runs using ethical sourced materials and labor.

What makes us proudest brand-wise? The relationships. Whether it’s a returning customer who shares how their Ashbury CoCo piece became their “go-to,” or a fellow creative social media trendsetter we’ve partnered with — every connection, every echo of what we make in someone else’s life, is what we’re building for.

We’re not here to chase fast fashion — we’re here to create wardrobe staples with soul. For readers new to AshburyCo.Co, think of us less like a fashion brand and more like a wearable archive — one where every piece is an intentional chapter in your story.
