Meet Wilma Torres of Mrs. Mima in Ontario

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wilma Torres.

Wilma, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my business by buying a small amount of cake stands and decor to host family and friends at my own home. I felt like it was something I could put a lot of detail in to host awesome parties. I thought about starting a full-time dessert table business because I knew I had a knack for it. But I didn’t have a lot of items. One day my good friend Ladasha told me that she was hosting a baby shower for her best friend and needed help with the decor. She knew I was looking to start collecting items for myself so she offered to give me money to go purchase all the decor she needed for the dessert table with the agreement that I would get to keep the decor in exchange for putting it all together for her. I thought what a great way to invest some of my time in doing something I loved AND also getting decor out of it for free. After setting up that table, I started getting requests from people who saw my display and wanted me to do the same. So in exchange for setting everything up and shopping for the items myself, I got to keep the decor. I started getting more and more referrals and it has allowed me to acquire a large collection of items to start a full-time business soon.

Has it been a smooth road?
It wasn’t always a smooth road. With so many people throwing parties and events, everyone wants a new creative theme. With each new theme, comes the need to purchase more unique decor. The biggest struggle has been purchasing the additional items needed. Although I have been able to collect a lot of party items, I am still putting in a lot of my own money to get additional decor to go with their theme. I see this as an investment, though. And because I want to make this a full-time business in the future, I am not spending as much on the items because the money collected for their event is going into the decor so I see this as a great chance to grow my business.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mrs. Mima – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in putting together dessert tables for any theme. I am most known for being very detailed with the idea that my clients would like to see and also having them be very involved in the entire process. I want to make sure they are 110% happy with the dessert table so, from the beginning of their experience, I get the details of what they would like to see, and along the way I send them updates from pictures of me shopping to get their input on whether they like the item I am purchasing to getting together an entire mock setup before their event to make sure they like what they see and can also make changes. The last thing I would want is for someone to hire me to decorate their event and then the day of their event they are not satisfied with the end result. I wouldn’t want that for my own party so I wouldn’t want anyone else to go through the same thing. I am most proud of this personal experience because it shows my clients that for me, it’s all about putting something amazing together for them. It’s not about the money to me, it’s about the end result. The satisfaction I get from taking the photos of my whole setup is what makes me the happiest. Seeing what I created is the best.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that this city is so diverse and having this business, it has allowed me to meet new people and create friendships. The thing I like the least about this city is the traffic. It’s hard to make sure I plan ahead for the arrival time to set up when I never know how the traffic will be. That can be tricky sometimes.
