Hi Whitney, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
bLAck X LA is the name of the business I started with my big sister Britney. We called it bLAck x LA because we’re both African American and born and raised in LA. We decided to start our brand for many reasons. We wanted to be the first in our family to have something we own, continue to break “generational curses”. We want to inspire other young people from LA as well. Especially south LA. Growing up lower middle class, we were able to see a good mix of how to be and how not to be. We are currently still a new business but we plan to grow bigger and better each day.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road, we have struggled with fear, doubt, being stuck in the comfort zone. Sometimes we get in our own way. We try to maintain focus and push through it all. It’s easier to keep going once you stop blocking your path.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
bLAck X LA is the name of the brand/business. Right now, we are just getting starting, we officially launched in April of 2021. Right now, we offer goods, such as fitness hula hoops and milestone hats. Our weighted hula hoop is our first product. It is a fitness hula hoop used to train your core and muscle mass. The goal is to offer both goods and inspiration. We want to inspire and motivate people. We want your readers to know that we are relatable and that we care. We’re different and we’re doing things differently. Check our website and page out for more information.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think risk taking is scary but necessary. Sometimes you have to just jump! Let go of fear, hesitation, doubt, anxiety, etc. and just do it. Especially when you have nothing to lose and something to gain. Everything you want is usually on the other side of the risk you’re afraid to take. Do it!
