Meet Westchester Freelance Creative Professional: April Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to April Jones.

April, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Fresh out of undergrad, I started working in entertainment on television shows and movies, then randomly decided I wanted to get my masters degree in Business with a concentration in Marketing. After finishing up my master’s program at John Hopkins in Baltimore (MD), I moved to LA and have worked in the beauty industry ever since. Nowadays I work as a copywriter, content creator, video creative director and marketing creative consultant for beauty brands mostly.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s always a grind trying to “make it” in a city like LA where there is so much competition. I’ve always been myself and allowed my work to speak for itself. Eventually, everything started happening organically and I was on my way to being where I wanted to be professional, although I have a LONG road ahead of me.

Is there some part of you work that is particularly difficult?
The hardest and most rewarding part of my “work” is actually the same. Since I work on so many different brands simultaneously, it’s challenging at times to switch creatively from project to project. Since my background and expertise is in branding and marketing, I’m a stickler for maintaining brand voice and consistency, so if I’m working on color stories for Fall 2017 and have to switch to concepts for a rough and tough men’s grooming brand it sometimes takes me a second to readjust my train of thought.

What are you striving for, what criteria or markers have you set as indicators of success?
As cliche as this may sound I define success as doing what you love, while consistently evolving.

What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future are to actually plan. I’ve never been much of a planner but feel like it’s time to finally grow up!
