Meet Wendy Whitmore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Whitmore.

Wendy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 2013, Truth Healing & Evolution Counseling Services was born. I, Wendy Whitmore MS LMFT founder & CEO made the decision to become a full-time Womanpreneur after being diagnosed with a chronic condition that drastically changed my way of life. I wanted to create a safe space for clients to freely express themselves that encourages them to “stretch & grow” and teaches the coping skills necessary for their journey of self-discovery and emotional healing.

In 2015, I founded THE iLove Me Experience, with the purpose of crafting intimate & unique experiences to assist women in starting, continuing, or advancing their wellness journey. This was my homage to my mother Ruth Jackson-Ward and my grandmother Ruthie Mae Jackson, who taught me that as a woman we must pour into, love, honor and cherish ourselves in order to pour into, love and cherish others.

In 2017, I founded THE My Warrior Life Community™ and formed the My Warrior Life™️team. As a child, I was very lonely and always longed for sisters. Throughout the years, I have been blessed to build a community of SisterFriends, that have allowed me to lean on, learn from and grow with them. And it is because of my community of SisterFriends that I wanted to create a space for women to build a community of their own. In this space women engage in healthy communities that encourage them to maintain their wholeness by bringing calm & order to their life.

On September 8, 2020, I closed escrow on my first piece of commercial property and founded WLW HEALING HOUSE. I am SO excited about this new business venture, which allows me to combine wellness, self-love, self-care and traditional therapy. With WLW HEALING HOUSE, I am excited to bring even more unique wellness services to the people.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the reasons I became a Womanpreneur was because of the chronic illness that I was diagnosed with in my late 20’s and I came from a long line of Womanpreneurs & Entrepreneurs. I also wanted the flexibility of being able to focus on my health and my career on my own terms; yet it seems like the journey became tougher in September of 2018. On September 9, 2018 my paternal grandfather passed away and I was faced with the difficult decision of canceling what had become my annual wellness retreat and losing close to $15,000 or attending my grandfather’s memorial service. It was the first time that I found myself at a crossroads in regards to being an entrepreneur and having to make a decision based on my bottom line and not my heart. Shortly after my grandfather’s passing my dad (step-dad Aaron Hodges Jr.) had a heart attack the day before thanksgiving and my mom a mild stroke on Christmas Eve. Yet the hits kept coming and on Sunday February 3, 2019, as the world watched the Super Bowl, I watched my father take his last breathe. This all happened in a six months span.

It was then that I had to make the decision about how radical my SelfCare plan needed to be. I was grieving and grieving hard and I needed to give myself the space and grace to do so. I had to acknowledge that the compound grief I was experiencing would impact me greatly for years to come. Once I acknowledged that Radical SelfCare, had to become my way of life, I lightened my weekly load of clients and made it a point to take mini-vacays and plan larger vacations for the summer and my 40th birthday in December. In 2019 I learned that I didn’t have to kill myself in order to be successful. I learned that my Spirit, Soul, Mind and Body needed to be nurtured and tended to in a way that I had never done so before. The funny thing is, is that in 2019 I hit six figures for the first time since being in business, despite the fact that in 2019 I reduced my weekly client load, took vacations to Orlando, New York, and Cabo for my 40th birthday.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
WLW HEALING HOUSE is a place of healing for the Spirit, Soul, Mind & Body. Human beings need a space where they can unapologetically focus on everything SelfCare. In this space, we will offer services and experiences curated to focus on Spirit Care, Soul Care, Loving THE Mind & Body Care. And we are working to normalize the practice of RADICAL SelfCare.

I believe what sets me apart from others in my field is that from the beginning, I was willing to adapt to the needs of my Community. I knew that people of color aren’t always comfortable with going to therapy, and so very early on in my career, I started finding ways to bring therapy to the people. Along with studying psychology in undergrad, I also majored in ethnic studies. Back then, people could not understand why someone who wanted to be a therapist would see the importance of studying other cultures as well. For me, it made total sense because in order to help others, I needed to understand where they were coming from. And so this is what I relied upon to bring therapy to the people.

I am most proud of the fact that despite the health challenges I have faced and the compounded grief I am still working through, I am still here, still standing, still serving God’s people and blessed to be doing the work that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE!

What were you like growing up?
As a kid, I loved to read, entertain (singing and acting) and be with my cousins. I also adored my grandmother (who passed away on 12/29/2019) and my poppa, and so spending time with them was really special. I was quirky, drummed to my own beat, loved to learn (still do, I call myself a sexy nerd) and as much as I enjoyed being around people, I also loved being by myself as well.
