Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Fachini.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Wendy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Wendy Fachini Piano studio was established in 1994 after I moved to Thousand Oaks and began piano teaching. Initially, I worked through a music store to build experience and then decided to open a home studio. I joined MTAC (Music Teacher’s Association of California) in 1994 and have been an active member ever since. In 1998 the music store I was affiliated with closed and I became a totally independent piano school.
With more than 45 years of piano experience including a bachelors degree in Music from Heidelberg University and graduate studies in Musicology at UCLA, I bring a high quality of music education to every lesson taught. Recently, I published two music teaching books, Scales and Chords I and II and also became a member of NAMM (North American Music Merchants association). A recent upgrade purchase of a grand piano means there are two pianos in my studio for ensemble work. When you take piano lessons here, you learn directly from the author of Scales and Chords.
I teach students of all ages and abilities. Presently, my youngest student is a 4-year-old beginner. I also teach adults and have had retired seniors over 80 years old. Each lesson is tailored to the individual musical needs of the student.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The first struggle for the studio came when my son was born in 2000. I stopped going out to students’ houses and cut my teaching load in half in order to not need daycare. It worked for about 13 years until my divorce. By far, the greatest struggle came with my divorce in 2013. The studio had to become the primary source of income for my son and I. By publishing my books, creating a website, and becoming present on Yelp, Google, and Linked In, I began a marketing blitz that has yielded some successes. My little studio is beginning to rise above its humble beginning to become relatively well known in the community.
Wendy Fachini Piano Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Wendy Fachini Piano Studio is a small home based piano studio that provides private piano instruction for any age and ability or musical background. I teach all the lessons individually and tailor each one to the specific student’s music interests. I specialize in piano performance, composition, theory, and scale work. I am known as the author of Scales and Chords I and II, both of which were exhibited at the New York City Book Expo this past June. What sets me apart from other piano studios is mainly the extensive musical background I have. I am not locked into a state curriculum and provide opportunities for students to perform if they desire it… When you take piano from me, you learn from the author and also benefit from over 45 years of piano experience. I am most proud of being able to create a small, high quality education environment for piano instruction.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success in every triumph my students have. Their successful learning and continued interest is what tells me I am on track with my business. When a student struggles with a concept or a specific piece of music, I have to find another way to present the technic found within the song. Sometimes there are a dozen ways to present an idea and maybe one of them will make sense to the student and give that lightbulb moment. That is my success too.
