Meet Wendy Contreras of Suhay’s Soaps in Downey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Contreras.

Wendy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
One day, before I started Suhay’s Soaps, I was changing my son when I noticed he had a big dry red patch on his leg. He said to me, “Mom my leg has been itching a lot“. So of course, I took him to the doctor the next day and they told me it was Eczema from harsh soaps.

I myself suffer from eczema too so then from there, I started researching how to help dry skin, Eczema and Psoriasis. I didn’t want to have my son with prescribed ointments or medication. I started buying soaps that were supposedly mild and good for the skin. But when I started reading all the ingredients behind the soaps, I couldn’t believe that one bar of soap was full of harsh chemicals. I felt so bad that my family and everyone were cleaning their skin with a soap full of chemicals that are not good for them and are not aware of how it can harm us. I just couldn’t let my family use this kind of soaps anymore.

From there and on, I was on a mission of learning how to make my own handmade soaps, deodorants and hair products. I started reading about essential oils, natural oils and butters that will help dry skin and Eczema. I was so excited to learn more and more about all the great benefits of natural body products. Now I have created handmade soaps, Body, hair products and deodorants with natural ingredients that nourishes your skin and moisturizes. We are cruelty-free, Vegan and our products are environmental friendly.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest struggle was trying to juggle both my small business and my Family. It was definitely hard at first before opening the store. To be able to stand out I offer delivery to my local community and close cities nearby. I offer deliveries so people could get to know my products. I deliver to escrow offices, reals estate offices, houses and stores nearby. It was hard delivering in my car and I had to carry a big basket so people can see what I made and explain why I make it.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Suhay’s Soaps story. Tell us more about the business.
Suhay’s Soaps is a Natural Body and Hair Products company. I hand make every single thing, body soaps, face soaps, shampoos, hair conditions, hair masks and natural deodorants.

I make natural body products that are eco friendly, biodegradable and environmental friendly. I take out anything that can harm us from our beauty products. Our customers always come to me for second opinions when it comes to any skin condition. I can honestly say I think I was gifted with just looking our skin and knowing what is going on.

What makes me so proud is when customers come in and they thank me for helping their skin. I have lots of customers that come in with small children with dry skin, eczema, psoriasis and I recommend them one of my soaps and moisturizers and the next thing you know they come in to thank me, how is almost gone or it went down. My customers have form such a strong bond with me that they are always happy to stop by small shop.

I hand make everything myself and use no chemicals, preservatives, sulfates or parabens. I use more of a holistic healing in my products. I use lots of essential oils, herbs from Mexico, Central America and South America. We also use natural oils, teas and moisturizing skin butters.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I definitely believe in good luck! But strongly believe more in God. I feel like he answers my prayers and dreams to be able to push my gift more and help anybody that suffers from any skin condition.
