Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendi Morrison.
Hi Wendi, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am an artist from L.A.; I left in 2007 after a disabling accident, to create an animal sanctuary, and retreat for city peeps to come to visit and decompress from the static.
I grew up in the film industry as my father was a Director of Photography(Hawaii 5-0 original series); mom worked at Desilu, and Warner Brothers. I have been an artist and animal advocate all of my life; worked with Laurel Kinder from Kinder4Rescue. My band Mercury 5, was prominent on the Sunset strip from the mid ’80s through the late ’90s. My day gig back then was working for celebrities and music/film industry executives.
Now, I make “New Media” films to support the animals, and in which the animals also appear. “This is not dying” stars Gary Austin founder of The Groundlings; a dark comedy, music driven-art drenched, magic mushroom, wild ride! Along with my current project making the film festival rounds: “Camp OrangeRay”, an art-rock-documentary about the work I do here with the animals and our human friends at Pixie’s Place at OrangeRay non-profit 501c3.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Besides the 20-foot fall off a roof onto concrete that disabled me, and along with a surviving an abusive marriage; the challenge has been to keep the animals fed with the donations we receive, along with Mother Nature herself which has had us in the middle of 2 Summer’s in a row of Mandatory Fire evacuations, and now, hit by the flood. We are located in a tiny village at the entrance to Sequoia National Park. We are on the river as well. When the flood hit a few weeks back, we lost our corral, hen, and duck houses; along with the extensive art installation along the river; several fruit trees and the vegetable garden. Literally wiped out as the water tore through the property, leaving massive piles of sand and debris.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a singer-songwriter, my band/s have opened for Tool, Weezer, System of a Down, Incubus, and Primus to name a few. I have had songs in movies: “True Crime”, and ‘Embrace of the Vampire”. I am a SAG actor, have won awards for my songs, photography, and poetry. I am a natural-born shaman, so after my accident, I finally fully embraced this path. I perform energy healing work/sound healing via bowls, tuning forks, and frequency. I had utilized my intuitive nature most all my life, however, now it became my mission.
My music was always way ahead of its time, which is why it is now so prescient in this moment. Even my sound healing work began 16 years ago, before the trend. Not to mention my film work, which not only infuses all of my artist expression and the animals…but subject matters, and how I approach the projects as a whole, has a strong visionary aspect to it. In addition, I also make crystal jewelry, and Orgones (Energy Diffusers).
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Obviously past band members: guitarist Michael Jost, bassist Gary Baxter, drummer Christian Werr; producer/guitarist Steve Caton(Tori Amos, Human Drama, TSOL), engineer Dan Nebenzal(Tori Amos, Belinda Carlise/The Go-Go’s, Madonna). The best creative team ever! Steve Caton was an early music mentor of mine for sure.
My biggest supporter through the toughest of times has been Brent Bolthouse (The Bungalow, Neon Carnival/Coachella), without his love and support, I would not have made it through the roughest parts.
I mentioned Animal Advocate Laurel Kinder who is devoted to her path; my Co-Producer & best friend Misty Tamburelli, cinematographer Sergio Lapalma, and screenwriter/3D artist/designer/creator/web developer-architect-computer genius Mark Lowe(TRON3), who also has a great podcast on YouTube: “Deep Thoughts Radio”.
