Today we’d like to introduce you to VK Lynne.
Hi VK, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After several years of fronting hard rock/metal bands such as The Spider Accomplice, stOrk, and Vita Nova,
singer/songwriter VK Lynne brings her plethora of experiences in various genres together on her new solo project to create a sound that she has dubbed ‘blues metal.’
The new album was recorded over the course of 2024, and released in a unique way: Every month, a new single, with its accompanying music video, was launched. At the ned of the year, two bonus tracks were added to the 12 monthly tracks on the physical CD, titled ‘The Spider Queen.’
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
‘The Spider Queen’ is my fourth full-length solo album, and it feels good to reconnect with my solo identity in between bands. When I’m working on a band project, I’m pouring my creative energy into collaborative work, and so naturally, some of my more eccentric or adventurous ideas have to be shelved. So it feels good to fly my freak flag again!
Every month, my producer (Cody Johnstone) and I set out to create a piece of art. We followed literally no rules of genre, format, or tone, haha. We just gave each song the respect it deserved and realized it on its own merit. When listened to in its totality, The Spider Queen really tells the story of a very challenging, tumultuous, and rewarding year.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
One of the things I really like about this record is that it shows the two main sides of my musical personality pretty clearly, and that dichotomy can be brought into the live show. I can go out with a big, noisy band and play my rock and metal material, but I can also take my guitar into a coffeehouse and play a singer-songwriter set acoustically. Both of those incarnations are deeply me, but both are different aspects of my character. And I think it’s important for art to reflect a reality which most of us share (we’re all more than one “thing”), to its listeners.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Haha! People are often surprised to learn that I “moonlight” as an English teacher. I love grammar and literature, and I love teaching students to harness the magic inside language.
Although I am mainly a songwriter, I’ve published two novels, poetry volumes, and various articles in magazines and anthologies. I love the music of words, and sharing that music is a gift.
