Today we’d like to introduce you to Virginia Viera.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in 1958, in a quiet town half an hour away from Argentina’s capital city Buenos Aires. Born to middle-class parents who worked and lived near the “Delta” by the Lujan River, I always loved the water and simple things in life.
I started painting when I was five years old and has been doing it all my life, taking my love for the arts to different areas; always trying new techniques, surfaces, and using a wide variety of styles and mediums, and using whatever gets in my hands from canvas, wood, metal, clay to leather. I studied Architecture at the Universidad de Buenos Aires, in Argentina, from which I graduated in 1982; but I always kept focusing on what I really love: to Paint.
I never really went to any art school, I always follow my inspiration and try to recreate those ideas with the colors of my imagination.
Please tell us about your art.
I’m a painter, a creative person, I can work with my hands making whatever I want!!. I can use oil, acrylic, watercolor, pencils, charcoal, on canvas, paper, leather, walls, tree barks. It is a passion for me. My way to escape from reality and immerse in my own quiet world. Most of the time I don’t have a preconceived idea, I just take the brush and go! The images and colors flow from my brain. Many times the ideas are flying so fast with bursts of inspiration and I have to work in two or three different projects at a time.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I have been painting my whole life, but as a working mother of three, was no easy way and little time to show my work Buenos Aires. At that time to be a full-time artist was difficult when I was a full-time mom with a career as an architect which I worked at worked at for 23 years.
When I moved to Los Angeles, almost 20 years ago, I discovered I had more freedom. I started to find many ways to create and places to show my art. I know there now is a big art movement in Argentina and, makes me happy to see the young artists create so many original pieces in so many mediums. Today you can find exhibitions and opportunities every week around LA.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I was showing my paintings around Los Angeles, for many years, Dysonna City Art Gallery, MCAU, Montalban Theatre, Little Tokyo Art Complex, BuckWild art Gallery, WOCA, Muzeo, Latino Art Museum and more venues, restaurants, cafes from Venice Beach to DTLA. In 2016, I was selected to paint a lifesize Cow, I named Picowsso, for the San Luis Obispo Cow Parade! I also was chosen to create a full wall mural at the Pacoima City Hall.
My next exhibition will be at my Studio Gallery, February 14 (yes Valentine day)
