Today we’d like to introduce you to Violetta Bida
Hi Violetta, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My husband and I are professional fencing athletes (I am Olympian, three-time world champion, silver medalist at the World and European Championships.
Sergey Silver medalist of the Olympic Games, world champion and three-time European champion)
With almost 20 years of experience and knowledge in the field of sports, we took the chance to pass on our sports knowledge as coaches.
As soon as we crossed the US border, the Russian Federation filed a wanted list and a criminal offense against us. (There are a lot of articles about this)
This meant that there was no turning back, which we understood when we decided to move to America. We weren’t intimidated by the daily articles and comments about us, we just continued to do what we came here for.
My husband and I decided to pass on our knowledge to every athlete, so we created the online fencing application Bida Foundation App.
We have been working on the app for 4 months, every day, filming author’s workouts, exercises and psychological sessions. At the same time, I was pregnant, I found out about it as soon as we arrived in America. Surprise!))
Our son is already 6 months old and we continue to work and develop our application by connecting other athletes. Our goal is to create a large, cohesive, professional team around the world to strengthen and develop fencing in the United States and around the world!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course, it wasn’t all simple! Moving, new people, a new country, even road rules! When I started driving in America, I realized that there are even different rules here.
For example, in Russia, when your car has given way on the road, you say thank you by pressing the emergency stop button once.
No one here will understand what you mean by that! And at first I wanted to take on the role of a leader and teach people this technique here, but on the hundredth attempt I gave up, I realized that it was stupid to hope to teach something that is not accepted here.
I concluded that each place has its own rules and either you accept them or you don’t, there is always a choice. We accepted America and it made it easier. When you go against yourself, against your desires, you fight, not enjoy. When you accept what is around you, the universe gives you more. I’m happy to be here, happy to get to know myself every day. And I’m happy to get out of my illusions.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
When we moved to America, we immediately got to the big “Summer Nationals” competitions.
The system, the organization, the atmosphere, the professionalism of the athletes and the energy in the hall impressed us. I was particularly impressed by the athletes’ training. I saw their eyes, which were filled with fright, then I thought, how can I transfer my psychological knowledge to all interested athletes, since I have a psychology degree and I went through a huge school in professional sports.
During one of our dinners with my husband, we came up with the idea to create an application. How? When? We didn’t know what to do, but the desire overcame the questions and we just began to slowly move towards our goal.
From October 2023 to March 2024, we worked on the application and content.
We have set a goal for ourselves: To share with the whole world the knowledge and experience that we have, as well as to assemble a professional team of athletes on our Bida Foundation platform.
Now we continue to develop and expand our application by offering collaboration with other athletes.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
When Covid 19 started, I didn’t believe that we wouldn’t go to training camps and competitions, I thought it would all end now. But unfortunately, all athletes were closed in their countries and no one could even train.
The time of Covid-19 was a time of recovery and rebirth for me. The Russian national team did a training camp every month and at the athletes’ training camp, every day they exercise and train twice, and so on throughout the season (from September to July). You were at home for 3-5 days and again the training camp, competitions. Yes, I loved my schedule and my life, but I remember how tired I was, how my injuries started and it was the end of 2019. Even then, I realized that I was not ready for the Olympic Games, my result began to decline and I would not go to the Olympics!
But at the beginning of 2020, they explain Covid-19 to us! Of course I didn’t believe it and it was terribly boring to stay at home! But I took advantage of this time, this time was a recovery for me. Thanks to Covid 19, I got to the Olympics
