Meet Vijeyabhaskaran Mohan of Vijeyabhaskaran Mohan Photography in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vijeyabhaskaran Mohan.

Vijeyabhaskaran, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a Photographer in Los Angeles specializing in Product and Beverage photography. Born and brought up in India, I moved to the United States in 2015. Just like everyone else, I picked up a camera when I was really young, but I didn’t know I wanted to make photography into a career. It was the day when I was introduced to Richard Avedon I fell in love with his work and I thought I could be like him one day. Every dream starts off with an inspiration and he was my inspiration and idol. I didn’t know what to shoot then so I decided to start taking pictures of anything and everything which came across me. I joined a small photo group and started doing some street photography, that was the start.

It took me the longest time to convince my parents that I wanted to make photography as my career, but they were not happy with it. Just like every Indian parent, they gave me two options, I had to become a Doctor or an Engineer. I knew I was not going to give up on my dream, I kept working hard to convince them and applied for a lot of photography contests.

One day, I got a mail saying a gallery in India wanted to showcase my work. That was the day my parents realized I was serious about my work and let me follow my dreams. I am forever thankful to my parents for letting me chase my dream.

After joining brooks institute in 2015, I got to meet some wonderful people and got to collaborate with a lot of young professionals. This school changed my life and set a path for me to follow. I fell love with Photographing Products, especially glass bottles. My mentor Bill Cahill also a product photographer has been a great inspiration for me. If I am not in my studio I am probably with him brainstorming for new ideas or testing some crazy paint splashes. He thought me a very important lesson, we need to have the willingness to fail. If you fail you learn, get back up again and try harder.

I’m 25 years old now and if I go back I time I would not change a thing. This is exactly the life I wanted and I have it. Shooting could be stressful at times but I have fun doing it I love what I do and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s definitely not a smooth road. Convincing my parents was a big challenge for me. Mainly because every single person in my family is a Doctor. They wanted me to be like everyone else, but I had to prove to them they I was serious about photography. Making them understand that I was going to move to a different county where I didn’t know anyone and will still be able to make it was challenging.

Being a photographer is not as easy as it may sound. Critiques could be hard. Some people might think your work is the best thing they have ever seen, others might not be nice about it. But as artists I think as artists we should respect what other people think, learn from them, take what you can and keep working hard. If you let the negative comments get in your way, it will affect the creative process and shut you down.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Vijeyabhaskaran Mohan Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My company is Vijeyabhaskaran Mohan Photography specializing in photographing small products, reflective objects, beverage, and food. I collaborate with my re-touchers and stylist to deliver the vision of my client and make their product(s) look the best. We love what we do. So everything which goes into a project is well taken care of and we try to go above and beyond to make the impossible happen and deliver promised results.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I would still be shooting in my studio since this is what I love doing and I would not change it. Spending countless hours in the studio with lights in darkness is like a meditation for me. Helps me get focused and try new things. However, I am starting to work on a few personal projects which will be updated soon on my website. 🙂
