Today we’d like to introduce you to Victor Wilde.
Victor, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY in a very Brooklyn Italian Family. Started riding horses bareback on the beach at three years old with my father. Yes, in Brooklyn. Decided to become a Vegan at the same age. It went over so well that my mother once chased me around the house, out the door and down the block with a chicken cutlet screaming, “Eat it!” I created my first piece of art at seven years old.
A hand sewn owl made of my mother’s nylons, buttons and pillow stuffing. I managed to attend college for film only to be thrown out twice. Returned to NYC, became a street performer and ran for mayor. Moved to LA, started a band, made costumes. Realized while modeling in the box at the Standard Hotel that I should make clothing. Started Bohemian Society, sold out in stores and keep it going forever. Long story short, I am what I am and that’s all that I am.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Life’s going to throw everything it has at you and it owes you nothing. It’s how you handle situations that define you. Learn and keep moving.
Bohemian Society – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
…begins on the streets of Brooklyn where experiential artist Victor Wilde cut his teeth and first shared with the world his work in experimental video and public performance art. Victor’s interactive fashion performances and installations have appeared at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Somos Gallery (Berlin), Tokyo Fashion Week, the Walt Disney Concert Hall (LA), LA Weekly’s Artopia, and the OC Center for Contemporary Art.
It is from his art that The Bohemian Society label was borne in Downtown Los Angeles in 2003, where Victor continues to live and work.
The Bohemian Society collection is meant to excite and surprise. Each item of clothing, while worn, should inspire the same feelings you get from seeing powerful art. It strives to be thought-provoking and emotional and bigger than itself, reflective of something both hidden and essential about the world; enduring but of its time.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
It’s all Art. Contributing and drawing from our collective unconscious is success. Having the ability and courage to be yourself is success.
