Hi Veronica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As I enter into 10 years as a practicing Esthetician, and 4 years as a business owner, my initial journey into entrepreneurship was a rough one. My entrepreneurial journey began in 2020 when COVID hit. At the time, I was working as an Esthetician for two spas, both of which temporarily closed due to the pandemic, not knowing when they would open again. While this situation initially seemed daunting, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Working for these two spas performing repetitive “cookie-cutter” facials left me feeling drained and unfulfilled. I yearned to provide more value to my clients and expand my expertise, but I was hesitant to leave the stability of these jobs. However, COVID became the push I needed to take the leap.
During the shutdown, one spa temporarily laid off its employees, allowing us to file for unemployment to gain some financial stability. However, the other spa’s response was less than favorable. When I expressed my concerns to the owner and mentioned my intention to quit to explore other opportunities, I faced ongoing harassment and threats.
This owner went as far as threatening to sue me if I opened my own business and claimed I couldn’t work within a certain radius of their spa. Although I now recognize the absurdity of these threats, at the time, they filled me with debilitating fear and panic. Despite this intimidation, I eventually did open my own spa!
Unfortunately, due to these threats, I refrained from marketing my business for nearly two years, fearing retaliation if that owner found out. It took me a long time to overcome this fear and fully embrace my role as a business owner.
As I approach my fourth year in business, I couldn’t be prouder of how far I’ve come. While the journey hasn’t been easy, I’ve listened to my heart, stayed true to my passion, and persevered. Each day brings new challenges, but I grow stronger and more resilient with every obstacle I overcome. Despite the hardships, entrepreneurship has been incredibly fulfilling, and I continue to embrace the journey with courage, determination, and immense gratitude.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a small business owner, I’ve encountered a multitude of challenges that have tested my resilience and determination. From navigating the complexities of financial management to juggling multiple roles and responsibilities, each day presents its own set of obstacles. One of the most significant challenges has been finding a balance between work and personal life, as the demands of entrepreneurship can often blur the lines between the two. Especially as you begin to make friendships with your clients, as I do. I have had to learn to set clear boundaries, and that wasn’t always easy in the beginning. However, through these challenges, I’ve learned invaluable lessons about perseverance, adaptability, and the importance of seeking support from mentors, friends, and family. Ultimately, being a small business owner has been a journey of self-discovery, teaching me invaluable lessons that have shaped me both personally and professionally.

Working with me is a collaborative effort; it takes both of us to achieve our goals. What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My key attribute, which I believe contributes most to my success, is my drive. I am a determined individual when I have a passion. I thrive on continuous learning and personal growth. This propels me to strive for betterment in the things that bring me joy, such as my business and my creative passions.
