Today we’d like to introduce you to Fernando Vega.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Fernando. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Rap music was always in my life. I grew up on rap music. It became something I did with the other kids on the bus rides to school, just as fun. But in college, I actually had the equipment to start doing it myself and taking it more seriously, and that’s also when I got really into live shows and music from independent rappers. So, I didn’t really start making music until around 2012-2013. And even then, I didn’t take it really seriously until about 2018, when I decided to record my first album in Detroit. When I did that, I met some people that have worked with some major artists, Big Sean for example. And those people really showed love by giving me advice and industry information. One of the things that was said to me was that there isn’t really a music scene in Michigan, if I hope to do anything with it and make the right connections, I have to go to LA. And so I did. I quit my job that I had been at for five years, I left a decently established life, and I came to LA to take it seriously. Since then, I’ve had multiple articles published on me, I’ve dropped 3-4 music videos, dropped an EP, and I’ve recorded and released several singles. Just gotta keep it going.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t exactly call it smooth, but I would say it was rough either. I have a lot of support from people that believe in what I’m doing. It’s just a matter of the right exposure. I still have to master promoting to the right audience. And sometimes, it’s hard to keep up with the volume of content that’s expected because I treat everything like such an art. If it isn’t to a level that I think it should be at, I would rather not release it and work on something that comes out better. And that’s just not the way of the industry anymore.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I’m a rapper. I go by Vega-Genesis. I used to just go by Vega because that’s my last name and I prefer to just be myself, but that’s such a common last name that there are 100 artists that go by Vega as well. If you tried to search for me, you weren’t going to find me. It’s hard to say what I’m most known for as far as the music goes. I think “Suavé” has the most collective views and streams. I think people just know me as someone who’s thoroughly creative. I feel like I have really complete content in my catalogue. Like, my songs aren’t just songs, they come with amazing visuals, clothing to represent them, color schemes, and everything is just branded so well. I think what sets me apart though, is that on an introductory level, I don’t appear to have the presence that I do when I rap. People are always really surprised once they hear me do anything because it’s way better than they would’ve imagined.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My dad taking me to trade-shows and doing things with me to collect Pokémon cards. My dad was pretty into collectibles as well; mostly baseball cards and baseball-related things, but he knew I wasn’t so into baseball and got me started on Pokémon instead.
