Meet Ty Neff and Jackson McGovern of Lucky Wheels Garage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ty Neff and Jackson McGovern.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We started Lucky Wheels with the thought in mind that you shouldn’t have to own thousands of dollars worth of tools to work on your own bike, and that motorcyclists need a common gathering point that focuses on community, learning, and hard work.

We grew up in Texas, where most folks have a garage of their own, or at least a friend or relative with a garage full of tools. After relocating to Downtown LA, we realized this was not the case for most motorcyclists here in LA. With real estate at a premium, garage space is hard to come by, and for DIY-minded riders, there seemed to be a gap that needed filling. Hence, Lucky Wheels.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The response from the motorcycle community has been amazing. We signed up our first 20 members during our grand opening, and it’s been keeping itself afloat ever since.

Though a do-it-yourself garage is definitely very niche, it seems like the community was just waiting for something like us to pop up. We are regularly amazed at the phenomenal turnout to our parties and events and have a great group of regulars keeping the shop interesting at all times.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lucky Wheels Garage story. Tell us more about the business.
We’re Do-It-Yourself Community Motorcycle Garage located in Boyle Heights, just east of the Arts District Downtown Los Angeles. We provide the space, tools, and help for the DIY wrenchers and fabricators to work on their own bikes in the comfort of a professional motorcycle shop. We offer a day pass for $35 and a monthly, all access membership for a flat $100/month. The shop is decked out with 7 lifts, a ton of hand tools both metric and SAE, specialty tools for electrical and engine service, a full fabrication shop with MIG and TIG welders, frame jig, tubing bender, the list goes on and on.

In addition to being LA’s go-to hub for DIY’ers, we also host community events, group rides, and just opened up a full-service coffee bar: Lucky Wheels Coffee. With the help of friends and customers, we built it inside a shipping container next door to the garage. It’s open 7A-7P Tuesday-Sunday.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think luck is largely a result of the work you put into something. The name Lucky Wheels is kind of a play on that as if your bike is lucky it made it here. Work hard and you’ll find you get lucky more often.
