Meet Ty Morita of The Boogie in Redondo Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ty Morita.

Ty, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been in the bar/restaurant industry for over fifteen years and it has always been a dream of mine to open my own bar. I started as a busboy and eventually was able to gain experience as a server, then finally a bartender. Through hard work, some good luck and the support of friends and family, my partner and I were able to open The Boogie in Redondo Beach. We wanted to create a dive bar atmosphere so that anyone can feel comfortable but also feature amazing live music and entertainment. It’s a chance to vibe in an intimate setting with your friends and favorite artists.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a long journey that is for sure and it is not easy starting a bar from the ground up. We had a special circumstance with our liquor license and were scrambling to find the right location within an allotted time. We signed our lease with only a few days before we would have lost our license. Once that was handled we had the task of designing and decorating the bar, and really figuring out what we wanted the ambiance and vibe of The Boogie to be. From start to finish we spent over a year in preparation before we had our grand opening.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Boogie – what should we know?
The Boogie is a live music venue right on the Redondo Beach pier. We are steps away from some of the most amazing ocean views in the world. In the 70’s The Boogie was “Concerts by the Sea” which was a legendary jazz club and when you walk down the stairs and catch a glimpse of the stage you can absolutely feel the nostalgia from the past. My job is to book the music and events and I love every aspect of it. From giving new artists the opportunity to showcase their talents, to booking well-seasoned veterans and watching the crowd’s excitement I love it all.

What makes us special is the variety of entertainment we provide. You can play Jenga with your friends, watch the game for a minute and next you could be dancing along to an amazing band or DJ.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Never settling for what is in front of you. So many different challenges pop up on a daily basis, but you have to take initiative and keep on moving. Finding solutions is everything.
