Tsz Chung Lau

Hi Tsz Chung, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m an artist born in Hong Kong. The vibrant streets and rich cultures of California have been a source of inspiration and personal development for me. My journey with art began in Hong Kong, where I delved into the beauty of traditional fine art. The nature and variety of art has always resonated with me leading me to explore.

Moving from Hong Kong to the United States marked a turning chapter in my life. Upon arriving in California, I was captivated by the striking contrasts and beautiful harmonies between Western influences, both in life and artistic expression. It was during this time that I pursued a bachelor’s degree in Concept Art/Game Development at the Academy of Art University. The city’s breathtaking landscapes, vibrant arts community, and diverse population have greatly influenced my work as I transitioned from art practices in Hong Kong to the dynamic world of game development and digital artistry in California.

Throughout my journey, I’ve had the opportunity to take on roles such as concept artist while also sharing my knowledge as an art educator. This Californian adventure has been filled with growth, exploration, and an unwavering commitment to learning. I have had the opportunity to work on a range of projects. Each piece reflects my experiences and inspirations from both sides of the Pacific. As an artist, I see each day as a canvas waiting to be filled with ideas and creative expressions. I am thrilled to share this ever-evolving artwork that represents my life with all of you.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey hasn’t been easy. Every obstacle has shaped my evolving collection of experiences. Moving from Hong Kong to California brought changes, including the subtleties of language and the pressure to thrive in the concept art world. Finding a balance between preserving my understanding of art and meeting the demands of concept art often felt like navigating a tightrope. Additionally, facing competition tested my resilience and determination. However, each challenge sharpened my skills and brought richness to my expression.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work is a blend of traditional artistry and modern concept art. Throughout my years of experience in art, I have. Drawn inspiration from age-old theories, which has given me a unique artistic perspective grounded in time-honored foundations. Additionally, I have an appreciation for the world of concept art, where I can create imaginative possibilities. The thrill of bringing ideas to life and witnessing a world unfold is something I truly value about my work. What sets me apart is the understanding of the roots of art from the both traditional and modern aspects while also pushing its boundaries in exciting new directions. This dual expertise adds depth to every piece I create.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My journey, as an artist has been greatly. Shaped by a group of mentors and inspirations. I am incredibly grateful to Zudarts Lee, who was my early mentor. Not only did he teach me the foundational skills, but he also instilled in me a mindset of learning art. As I progressed, Yizheng Ke and Wangjie Li played a role in reshaping my perspective and deepening my understanding of art expression. They brought about a transformative phase that completely changed how I looked at art. An important affection to me in my journey has been Richard Schmid, a modern art maestro. His methodologies and theories have been essential in helping me bring together all that I’ve learned before and carve out my style within the vast world of art. To these artists and mentors, I extend my gratitude for their immense influence on shaping the path I’ve taken and enriching my artistic abilities.
