Meet Trailblazer Sara and Sofia Ambra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara and Sofia Ambra.

Sara and Sofia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We are identical twins from Miami, Fl. We’ve been performing comedy before we knew that’s what we were doing- whether it was singing and dancing for our family or trying to make our friends laugh, we loved doing stupid ish for people’s attention, together. Since our first set in LA at Scoopty Boopty’s (comedy show hosted in Van Nuys), we have been very fortunate to be surrounded by such a supportive community that has helped us grow more confident in our acts and encourage us to continue to push the boundaries of traditional stand-up comedy. We’ve been in the scene for about a year and a half, filling up our weeks with shows in venues such as the Clubhouse, Moving Arts, Angel City Brewery, Iron Triangle Brewery, The Ruby, Second City Hollywood, and Holy Grounds.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
A personal challenge we continue to face is discipline and surrendering to the creative process. After comedy, we’re both really, really good at procrastinating. Having each other is helpful in keeping the other on task, but there are definitely days when inspiration is nowhere to be found and laziness takes over. What feeds into that vice is the pressure we put on ourselves to only create A+ content only. Of course, you should always strive to do your best, but it’s a journey to get to that final, hilarious product, and we’re learning to embrace that. Making mistakes or “bombing” are natural factors that every comedian faces; we’re working towards accepting that the only way to know if a bit works, is to put it in front of an audience.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
We’re very proud of our act, especially the variety and energy we bring to the table. Two of our greatest influences are Bo Burnham and Flight of the Conchords. With that, musical comedy is our favorite and where we thrive. We also like to include slam poetry, dancing, and other miscellaneous bits to round out our act. The true driving force of our brand is the fact that we’re identical twins. Not only is it the reason we have such undeniable chemistry on stage, but turns out people *love* twins. So, we have the advantage of the audience already being excited to see us standing together before we even start performing. Once we jump into our set though, the collective energy in the room is addictive.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Own your material. You are your most important audience member, so you should create something that you genuinely find joy in. Do what YOU find funny, and do it with pride. Especially as a woman, people are eager to find cracks in your work and tear you down from the outside in. Staying true to yourself is what’s going to make this whole experience worth it.

These two will be on SNL one day! Too funny to describe, you have to see them live.
