Meet Trailblazer Sabrina Russell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Russell.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sabrina. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My mom definitely kept things interesting growing up. I moved around a lot my whole life. I started acting when I was in high school and I immediately fell in love. I have always been drawn to the vulnerability and truth of storytelling. Acting gave me an outlet that made me feel both at home and incredibly alive. Pursuing a career in the arts became the only option for me. I graduated from the University of Central Florida with a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Studies and a minor in Mass Communication. I immediately picked up all of my stuff and drove across country to Los Angeles, a place I had always longed for. I now freelance and create as much as possible while also pursuing acting.

Has it been a smooth road?
I was by no means born into a wealthy family. I have worked since I turned 16. This limited some of my choices growing up. However, everything I truly needed I received from my amazing parents or earned on my own. College was challenging in all of the best ways. I learned from countless mistakes, which is what college or whatever path you happen to be on during that stage of your life is for. Struggles are a given. That has become abundantly clear to me. What I am so grateful to have learned is that how you respond to struggle is what makes all the difference. One quote that really resonates with me is, “Life doesn’t happen to you, it happens for you.” It’s a waste of time and energy to worry or to victimize yourself. Just take everything in stride and keep going. You’ll figure it out. The struggle is there to prepare you for what the future holds.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I freelance in order to keep a flexible schedule. I work for event staffing agencies doing catering, promotional, or brand ambassador gigs. I also work part-time at a retail shop and I dogsit. When I am not working, I am exploring Los Angeles and filming my adventures along the way. I do modeling shoots, as well.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Just start. Wherever you are in your career. I know that sounds like an oversimplification, but trust me. Sometimes, starting can be the most daunting thing, because comparing yourself to others can feel inevitable and you can feel behind. Your mind starts running in frantic circles saying, “I still have to do this and that and, oh no, I’m not doing enough.” Try not to fall into that trap. Your path is just as valuable as the next person’s path and you have to start somewhere, so why not here? Start creating ANYTHING. Allow yourself to let go of perfection. Confidence will come.
