Meet Trailblazer Rose Hurwitz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rose Hurwitz.

Rose, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been the girl with a little too much on her plate—literally and figuratively. I have dreams as big as the Texas sky, a mind for math and science, a heart for the arts, a passion for preserving the planet, and, of course, a stomach for good eatin’. Trying to balance all of my interests has been difficult at times, but I wouldn’t change my path for anything.

I grew up loving, living and breathing dance and drill team in Houston, Texas, but in college, it was time to give up dancing to focus on a path to a more “realistic” career for me. My first three years of school were focused on choosing a major and leadership roles in Delta Gamma. It wasn’t until my Senior year that things started to click for me. I finally knew I wanted to have a career in marketing, but I was longing for more, so auditioned for the Pom Squad and made the team. Dancing made me feel whole again, and I realized it is something that I cannot give up so easily. Since graduating from Southern Methodist University, I have had a successful marketing career in client services and continued to dance professionally when I am not on the corporate clock. Never say never.

After my move from Texas to California in 2015, I found myself addicted to following new bloggers to fill the void of my empty “new kid” social life. The bloggers that struck me most were leaders of the zero waste movement. Ever since, I have been incorporating more sustainable practices in my daily life, including shopping primarily secondhand for my clothes and home goods. My commitment to used-only items introduced me to selling platforms like Mercari and Poshmark. When I discovered people actually make a living reselling through apps, I was hooked. Resale With Rose was born. Although still a part-time endeavor for me, helping pre-loved pieces find new homes brings me so much joy. This world is full of so many beautiful clothes and hard goods that shouldn’t go to waste. It is especially rewarding when I can share the ethical and ecological dangers of fast fashion with my friends and colleagues and encourage them to join me in my secondhand-first commitment

Although my corporate marketing, professional dancing, and part-time reselling careers keep my mind, heart, and passion plate more than full, I continue to dream big and maintain a healthy social life. It helps to make great friends along the way that will always lend a hand when the going gets tough or split dessert when your eyes are bigger than your stomach.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Luckily, my road to happiness and success has been a smooth one. I have always had great mentors and support from my family in everything that I do. My greatest obstacle has always been myself. Self-doubt is the biggest dream killer there is. I took three years off dancing because I did not think it was possible for me to pursue a career in the arts, but here I am with professional accomplishments on my resume. Once again, I credit the support of a great mentor of mine for convincing me to give it a shot. My advice to anyone wanting to try something new or reach the next level is to simply go for it. Make a plan, work hard and make it happen. You never know what you are capable of unless you try or who you might meet along the way that wants your dreams to come true as much as you do.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Resale With Rose – what should we know?
The common thread in each of my careers is personality. Marketing, entertainment and reselling takes a great deal of confidence, empathy, kindness, and authenticity. Building relationships with the clients and internal teams, my audience, or my customers is my top priority. It always amazes me that considering how different the day-to-day operations are for each of my roles, at their cores, the key to success is the same.

In the world of social media highlight reels we live in today, it is so important to remember that there is so much value in individuality. I am proud that despite my original thought that you have to be an ultra-stylish fashionista with fashion industry experience to have a profitable clothing reselling career, I have found success in selling to women like me: the eco-friendly shopper looking for a bargain and a bomb, Instagram-worthy outfit. A goal I have set for myself is to have a stronger social media presence, both the good and the bad and everything in between, to encourage more shoppers to shop secondhand first and give Resale With Rose a face. I want to build stronger relationships with my customers and fellow resellers.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
In my industries, women are the dominant force typically, but there are still challenges to overcome. For me and so many of my female coworkers, I have found that our greatest barrier is our lack of self-confidence, humble nature, or realistic mentality. We always think there is someone out there more qualified than us, so why try? If we aren’t the best fit, how could we be a fit at all? When starting my reselling business, I was so intimidated by other resellers with more experience, followers, and sales. Reaching their levels of success did not seem achievable, so I almost gave up before I started. The most helpful tool in starting my reselling business was seeking help and advice from these giants in the reselling community and finding other resellers with values similar to mine. Building a network of women that support each other and give each other the confidence to do more, think bigger and get outside of their comfort zones is going to break more barriers and open more doors for opportunities we never expected.
