Meet Trailblazer Kimberly Hawkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Hawkins.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kimberly. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m 18 and I’ve always been an artist at heart. I would paint and draw to express myself since I was a child. I was that creative teen that would paint on their walls, but don’t worry, my dad would let me. He was always fascinated with my creativity. Not to mention my parents have always been a great support system and my number one fans. Being a teen that loved art came in handy when I started getting into makeup. I realized how similar it was to paint. My dad signed me up for a 6-month makeup course and I was trained by some amazing makeup artist. Since I graduated from there, I have had so many great opportunities, I’ve worked on sets of movies, photo shoots, and worked with some pretty well-known people (while keeping it pro and trying not to fangirl). To me it’s not all about the money but, I’m just happy doing what I love. I wasn’t in a great place before this, I was dealing with a lot of personal issues. I’m really grateful to have family and my boyfriend rooting me on while I’m following my dream. My goal is to inspire other artists to follow their dreams even when they feel like giving up.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Growing up, I had a rough past. It was one of those things where I got mixed up with the wrong crowd and by age 16, I was very into sobriety and being mentally healthy. As for the industry, I’ve had some obstacles, I tend to think everyone is out to get me. People will rush you to be on time, tell you something doesn’t look good, a client can ruin be having a bad day and ruin yours. You learn to not take anything too personal though. It’s a lot of work but what helped me is to take constructive criticism and learn from these experiences. I’ve had people ruin my confidence in my work and I just wanted to quit, but I was told to only try harder to prove people wrong. Anybody can do anything if you put your heart into it.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about your business – what should we know?
I love creative, funky, out there type of looks! I also love the simple beauty. I never turn down an offer to use tons of glitter or bright colors. I dabble in some special FX though I’m still learning. My art style has always been more on the abstract but tasteful side.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I watch so much YouTube videos about makeup. Sometimes, you forget stuff and it’s always good to refresh your memory.
