Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Scheid and Kacie Griffin.
Jill Scheid discovered lash extensions back in 2010 while she was in esthetician school in Salt Lake City, Utah. She never intended on lashes being her career, but by the time she graduated from esthetician school, she had built quite the clientele. She moved to Los Angeles in 2012 and started the clientele building process all over again. Fastforward to 2018 – having almost a decade of experience in the beauty industry, she’s one of the most sought after lash artists in LA if you’re looking for the most natural lash extensions. She’s created a unique technique that gives her clients a beautiful but natural look without compromising the health of one’s own natural lashes.
Kacie Griffin moved to Los Angeles after graduating with a degree in Mass Communication. She spent over ten years climbing the corporate ladder in a number of marketing roles in industries from toys to clean energy. She spent her career driving marketing and global brand communications for some of the most iconic global brands, such as Barbie. Kacie met Jill after searching for the best lash artist in Los Angeles. Kacie became a consistent client of Jill’s, and the two would spend their bi-weekly appointment time brainstorming ways to grow Jill’s lash business.
The two officially joined forces in December 2017 to create Lash Bungalow. After over a year of creative planning, running financials, lots of excitement and even more heartache, Lash Bungalow opened its doors in January 2019. Located in Beverly Hills, Lash Bungalow provides a beautiful and inviting environment for all things lashes, brows, and mini facials.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely been a road filled with lots of bumps and starts and stops. We started working on Lash Bungalow for over a year before we ever officially opened our doors to our clients. From making sure our finances were in order, to finding a perfect location only to learn that the city wouldn’t approve the use of space for a salon, there were many times where we wondered if we should just scrap the whole idea. Even the space we ended up in, although now perfect, was full of many challenges. We had to use our savvy skills just to convince building management that we were qualified to rent the space. We pitched our business plan to about 8 potential investors, all of whom came back with a “thanks, but no thanks.” It got super discouraging at times, feeling like nobody believed in us, but, we had a vision and we kept at it.
Our advice to anyone trying to start a business would be to not give up! Believe in yourself full heartedly. Have a clear vision of what you want and do not take “no” for an answer. There will be so many people that will discourage you, but if you keep at it, you’ll find the right person or way to get it done. A great support system is so beneficial too; don’t be afraid to ask them for help! And know that whatever challenge you are presented with, you can find a fix.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Lash Bungalow – what should we know?
Lash Bungalow specializes in natural-looking eyelash extensions. We feel like we can never explain this enough. The brand and aesthetic that Jill has never wavered from is natural. It’s always been one of those things where after you get your lashes done with Jill, people look at you and say “did you do something to your hair? You look different.” Something so subtle, that people notice something is different, but they can’t quite put their finger on it. We find that to be a huge compliment, because who wants people to KNOW they have lash extensions? We think it should just be an enhancement of your own natural beauty.
We also offer lash lifts, brow waxing, mini facials and makeup application. We only use the highest quality products on our clients, which Jill has found through trial and error over the last decade. One day, we hope to have our own product line specially created by Jill.
Overall, what sets us apart from others, is that Jill has created a unique application technique for providing eyelash extensions. The end result is beautiful and full, but natural looking lashes without compromising the health of one’s own natural lashes.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
We wish we had had some advice for finding a mentor. It’s only been recently that we’ve really found some great mentors, and they’ve all mostly come from being a long time client. Now that we’ve officially opened, we’ve had mentors come out of the woodworks and been great to receive insightful business advice from people with their own successful businesses. So, I guess our advice is to not be afraid to ask questions to anyone. You never know who is standing by not wanting to impose on your ideas.
