Meet Trailblazer Itzy Martinez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Itzy Martinez.

So, before we jump into specific questions about dancing, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico. I started when I was 12 years old, I have been dancing for 13 years, and since the first dance class that I took, that it was a jazz class, I realized that I had found my passion.

I started taking jazz and Latin rhythms classes, I was training the same styles around five years, and thanks to the invitation of one of my closest friend, I decided to try something new and it was when I started with urban styles and a little bit of breakdance, being surrounded of amazing people, awesome dancer whom I learned a lot from them. My first classes teaching was when I was 14 years old, starting with a girls group from my school, and since that moment I loved to be sharing with more people, kids, teenagers, adults…

At 2011, I had the amazing opportunity to be dancing at the XVI Panamerican Games in Guadalajara, Mx, dancing with NORTEC and The Wailers, so then, I decided that I wanted to be doing this for all my life. I have been training different styles like: jazz, jazz-funk, ballet, lyrical jazz, contemporary dance, acrobatics, aerial dance, urban styles, breakdance, Latin rhythms like salsa, bachata, mambo, cumbia…, Afro-Cuban folklore, heels. all these have helped
me to open more doors and opportunities to be working teaching, in musical theater, musical videos, shows, concerts, with different agencies, choreographing for videos, showcase…

Definitely this is about discipline, keep training, keep learning every day, and always understanding
that every person has different abilities just be proud of all the things that you can do

Has it been a smooth road?
I think the hardest obstacles for me and for a lot of dancers is to have enough economic support for being paying training, classes, eat healthy, buy customes, buy the specific clothes that we need for training, and a lot of more things.

the most complicated situation is that you want to be training every day but of course, you need money for pay the classes so, when you start teaching or working as much as possible for having enough money, now you don’t have time to train.

The people don’t really think about how much effort and work is behind a professional dancer when they hire you they wanna pay you just a little bit, they don’t value the art.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a professional dancer and choreographer, I teach different styles or I can choreograph for shows, no matter which kind of show, musical videos, fashion runaways, concerts, commercials or musical theater.

I teach for kids, teenagers or adults.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I just think about my parents, they were and they are my best example and my biggest inspiration, I grew up seeing them working hard and having goals all the time. Teaching me that the only way to reach your dreams is working hard.
