Meet Trailblazer Claire Hachenberger and Adam Newell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Claire Hachenberger and Adam Newell.

Claire and Adam, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up with seven sisters, Adam witnessed the struggles that almost every menstruating person ever experiences. Yes, we mean that moment of terror and bone-chilling panic that strikes when you’re least expecting it. It may have been at school during science class or right before that one job interview: you just started your period, and you have nothing with you. With two parents across town (and often across state lines), Adam’s sisters were often left to their own devices when “Aunt Flow” came to visit. After learning that this was an all-too-common occurrence, Adam was inspired to create a simple, sleek, and all-encompassing solution.

In 2018, Delicately Coy was brought to life. Starting out as a simple tube with a pair of panties and a hygienic wipe, Delicately Coy soon developed into something more dynamic and reflective of a market need for more than just a fresh a set of undies and a clean bum. Shortly after its creation, Adam brought on Claire, a long-time friend and fellow creative who felt just as motivated to develop a personal panty kit. Having started her own period at age 10 during her 5th-grade math class, Claire toted a brown faux leather Mudd satchel with her everywhere she went just in case.

After exploring a variety of options, sizes, and contents, Delicately Coy now includes a reusable (and recyclable) discreet tube, a pair of seamless panties, an organic light tampon, an organic light liner, and a hygienic wipe. With Adam’s sisters’ struggles and Claire’s god awful satchel bag in the rearview mirror, Delicately Coy aims to provide an easy and accessible solution to menstrual care, as well as offer confidence and security for athletes, travelers, and more.

Delicately Coy is coming soon to major markets in 2020!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As Adam says, “You don’t know what you don’t know until you learn that you don’t know it.” We did not know it, but we learned it.

Despite Delicately Coy’s simple design, learning about the manufacturing of feminine hygiene products has not been an easy task. Currently, the FDA does not regulate the ingredients of feminine hygiene products but rather regulates their capabilities, as it considers them “medical devices.” With a passion to uphold the values of transparency and wellness, we were adamant to learn about what products are the safest, ethically-sourced and effective for Delicately Coy.

Yes, there were days where the stress and frustration in not being able to find the perfect source for our products was overwhelming. We refused to make sacrifices in the integrity of the product.

Similarly, neither of us had extensive business experience. Adam launched his own app, Coy, in 2015, and Claire had worked in operations for an LA-based bar catering and activation startup. We both knew that starting our own company in a completely different industry was going to be a struggle, but we believe that it’s 110% worth it.

For those women and others who are passionate about an idea or a concept, lean into it. If it’s easy, something’s probably not right. There again, most of us have never had it easy our whole lives. It doesn’t matter what your background or experience is–if you want it enough, you can have it. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who support you, who believe in your concept (no matter how radical it may be), and who you can fall back into when you need to just exist. It may mean waking up extra early to make phone calls and emails or to do hours of research before heading to your two jobs.

We swear it’s worth every single minute.

We’d love to hear more about Delicately Coy.
As a first-of-its-kind product, Delicately Coy is something new and revolutionary to the menstrual care product selection. Currently, there really isn’t anything on the market that does what we do or offers something relatively all-encompassing. We aim to combine accessibility, versatility, and wellness in one package to eliminate the process of having to go to the store and buy multiple products in bulk for your DIY emergency kit.

We are proud of our commitment to sustainable and ethically-sourced products, our fearlessness in the face of stigma about periods and menstrual care, and our roots in being a homegrown start-up that does have a truly personal connection to our product.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
Claire is a music person to the core, so Spotify is her life-line. We both spend a disgusting amount of hours in the car and travel fairly often by car, so she’s become a master playlist-creator. For finances, Mint and Stride are total must-haves. We love Stride’s features and simplicity, as it makes taxes and life in general as a business owner so much easier. We highly recommend it for those of you that are freelance, as well! For social media, we have become madly obsessed with Over. The Pro version is AMAZING and a true necessity. Claire’s favorite podcast right now is Shouting About the Silence, hosted by Madyson Cohen. Adam’s secret indulgence is Real Housewives of New York City. Needless to say, we’re Bethenny’s biggest fans.
