Meet Tracie Campbell of Brooklyn Charm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracie Campbell. She and her team share her story with us below.

Please kick things off for us with some background on the story.
The owner, Tracie Campbell has been in the crafting business for over 20 years. At 15, she started selling beaded bracelets to her schoolmates, teachers, and friends. She continued to make jewelry throughout college, majoring in fine art with an emphasis in jewelry design incorporating metalsmithing, ceramics, and woodworking.

Tracie opened her first retail location in NY almost nine years ago. Currently, Brooklyn Charm has two locations in NY, one in Ventura, eight in Japan, and one in Denmark (Denmark and Japan are licensed out). She has had over 14 years of experience selling in the merchant market place (Artists and Fleas (Brooklyn, Manhattan & LA), Bust Craftactular, Renegade, Unique LA, Union Square Holiday Market, Columbus Circle holiday market, POOL trade show, and so many more.

She splits her time between New York and California running her company with an amazing team leading each location. On top of all of this, she has been selling to the crafting community on Etsy since 2007 as one of its leading jewelry suppliers. Brooklyn Charm offers over 3,000 jewelry supply products at retail and wholesale pricing available to jewelry designers all over the world.

Tracie, we’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
If it’s a smooth road, then it’s not a hustle. Owning a business is a hustle, and there are always bumps along the way. We have to re-evaluate how we do business on a regular basis. With the ever-changing way retail, internet sales, and social media have forced businesses to evolve. We are constantly reminded that we need to keep on our toes, watch what is going on out there in the world, and adapt.

Adaptation is probably one of the hardest things about running a business. When you have a system set in place, that works for you, but does not necessarily work in the real world, you have to step back and find a solution to the new challenge. It’s a revolving door that never closes… ever.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Brooklyn Charm is a DIY jewelry company, that allows the shoppers to immerse themselves in jewelry design, without necessarily having to have their hands on the actual making of it.

We are specializing in making it for you! You come into our locations, choose your charms, match them to a chain or cord, and our friendly staff assists you in the design process, and WE make it for you on the spot. We offer these services at all of our locations, and also offer classes on and off-site for people to get their hands on the jewelry making the process as well. We also carry over 3k jewelry supply products on our website, where we supply jewelry designers all over the world.

I think the thing I am most proud of as a company, is offering a type of job that marries the retail industry, with the service industry, all the while allowing for the employees, and the customers to have a creative, hands-on experience in the process. I was always so bad at being a server and wasn’t a huge fan of retail, but somehow I took two types of jobs that I was not necessarily great at, and make them into my own. It really works for us “in between creative types.” I think this sets us apart from almost all businesses out there.

What were you like growing up?
I was very hyper and full of energy. I have actually calmed down quite a bit over the years, but that spark has never dimmed. I was into art at a young age and always wanted to act. I still do secretly. I started making jewelry at 14. My love for jewelry has not wavered in the 22+ years I have been making jewelry.
