Meet Toshiko Okawa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Toshiko Okawa.

Hi Toshiko, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was interested in kimono dressing so I got a license. As soon as I got a license, I got a job offer from the Japanese Film Festival. Fashion show, TV Commercials, Wedding and many more events.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
When I was asked to join the movie shooting as a kimono coordinator the first time, they told me that just come to the studio everything is prepared, but when I went, nothing was ready.

However, I was confident that I was able to demonstrate how to put on a kimono and Obi(sash) for the movie director, cameraman and other stuff before the shooting.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a kimono dresser and Koto(Japanese harp) player. I can do both traditional, creative kimono dressing and playing Koto at the event.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
There are many kimono lovers in LA, but the problem is that there are few size choices for kimono, socks, and footwear. So when traveling to Japan, I first stop by a kimono shop to buy various sizes.

Pricing:

  • $250 for Summer kimono + fitting
  • $350 for regular kimono + fitting
  • $500 for formal and Wedding + fitting
  • $400 for Japanese Geisha slippers
