Today we’d like to introduce you to Tori Horowitz.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in LA and I know it like the back of my hand. Because of my extensive familiarity with this great city, I don’t think I could be good at my job anywhere else. I have always been interested in design, architecture and the intersection of design and nature – how structures live within their environments and how people live in their structures.
After years of jobs in the entertainment industry and a stint at The Esalen Institute in Big Sur (working as a cook), I found myself wanting to bring more meaning to my life. I had a one-year-old baby and I needed a job that gave me joy, felt organic to who I am and afforded me time to spend with family. Real Estate was the perfect fit. That was 13 years ago and I have never looked back.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No road to success is perfectly paved. I managed to save my job during the housing crash in 2007. I debated whether or not I stay in the business at that point. A lot of my colleagues moved on to different professions. I had just starting to understand Real Estate. It was not time to get out. I think I made $10,000 that year. We were scraping by, but I was tenacious and I knew it would be worth it to keep going. Plus, I really had no other choice. I had to work, I had a baby and a mortgage, and starting over was not an option.
I have countless stories of complicated deals, difficult clients, intensely stressful scenarios and times when I thought I couldn’t go on. There are moments in every day when I question my ability to continue. I think some people think Realtors have an easy job and make good money for not doing much – that it can be a hobby or a part-time gig. I can tell you nothing is farther from the truth. Every day I have to hustle. Every day is a little bit of a struggle… But that’s what keeps me motivated. Nothing worth anything comes easy.
