Today we’d like to introduce you to Tona Ramirez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started as a classical violinist playing in local orchestras and traveling internationally. I grew up around musicians and artists and in addition to studying classical music, I was also exposed to a lot of traditional folkloric Mexican music. Once I started high school, I began exploring other instruments and genres of music and also began writing my own music. At the age of 15, I found a passion for singing and decided to dedicate myself to the craft. After high school, I attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA where I was able to cultivate a sense of self and what I wanted to express through my art. After my first year at Berklee, I decided to no longer attend and began playing the violin and singing for artists such as Aloe Blacc, Maya Jupiter and Quetzal as well as continue to explore and create my own music. In 2017, I released my debut EP entitled, “TODO” which featured three songs that I felt showcased my background in traditional Mexican music as well as Pop and Classical Music.
Has it been a smooth road?
I think with any path, especially one in the arts, there are quite a few bumps along the way. Being a woman of color in a male-dominated industry has been challenging at times, however, it has also given me the motivation to work harder and be better. It is also an industry that does not always prioritize talent over looks which I have struggled to come to terms with.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My music has always been a reflection of who I am. I am a singer, songwriter, and violinist. My goal is to release music that is honest and uplifting. My demographic is mostly young women of color which is something that I am aware of and a lot of my decisions – artistic or not – are influenced by. It is important to me that I can represent them in a way that is respectful and productive. I want to make music that is for them first and foremost. I hope that in my music, I can inspire them and remind them of how amazing they truly are. In addition, I am very proud of my dedication to working with women of color across all mediums.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel like I have an edge because I was born and raised in Los Angeles surrounded by artists and musicians. I never occurred to me to be anything other than a musician. To anyone starting out, I would say to be very sure of what you want to do. Establish your connections before you move here. Have things lined up for when you get here. It is the best city in the world for music but you have to be ready for it when you get here.
