Meet Tom and Tani Roberts of Bucket of Nails in Fallbrook

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom and Tani Roberts.

Tom and Tani, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a family we have always “tinkered” on the side. When we relocated from Orange County to Fallbrook CA, we made the jump to open a retail store. We are a family with five kids and we always gravitated to the dining table. If not for dinner, then with friends entertaining, or just a place for board games. The table was the center of our home. We started building our first tables from reclaimed wood and it started growing.

As our reputation and build shop grew we took on our dream. We had always wanted to have a build shop in our store. We want our clients to connect to what we are making for them. We opened our current location in the Fall of 2016. We invited local artist to make complimentary items as part of Bucket. We have candle makers, jeweler, barn wood and wine barrel items. We also have playroom in the store so even children have a good time.

We are a family of seven -Tom leads the build team and Tani works with the client’s designs. Skylar is on the sales floor, Shea is our picker, Mack, Julianna and Sam will jump in for our “we need you builds”, and Tyler will be joining the team full time to open the new showroom at Open Market OC in Sept.

Last year we stepped out of our comfort zone to build tables of one of the largest LA Rental Companies, this year we had the opportunity to build for Disneyland.

We love what we do – it is personal to us. Each table is built by hand, sanded until it feels just right. It’s about the family that we build for, it matters to us.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Retail is tough – we are open seven days a week and are hands on. We work longs days and need to look out for each other to take a break. We try to close the store one week a year to take a family vacation.

It also can get scary to make changes, we need to stop and look at what is working and what needs change. Knowing when to grow and when to just take a breath and rework what you have in front of you.

Not bringing it home – Tom and I will always go over our day with our coffee in the morning but we need to have a date night that Bucket is not invited on!!

Please tell us about Bucket of Nails.
We are a family business that specializes in building custom tables. We use pine or poplar wood and they are solid! What sets us apart is the wax finish. Using a wax allows our clients to keep their table beautiful and last for years. Our wax has the color of the table in it. You can cover a scratch or take out a stain. What I am most proud of is the build team – they work so hard and when I ask them for a crazy timeline or a build they have never tackled before – they nail it!!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing – ups and downs they got us to today. We are not afraid of falling on our backside – and we will. We just know we got each other so we can’t fail.
