Meet Todd Goodman of LA Light Photography in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Goodman.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was raised in Santa Barbara, California, where I discovered photography at the age of 6. Over the next few years, I taught myself traditional film and print processing by reading Kodak technical pamphlets. (really, what kid doesn’t?), At the ripe old age of 12, my brother and I created catalogs for the family business using product photos, all of which were shot in our makeshift garage photo studio. A career was born.

Later, I attended Brooks Institute of Photography and earned my BFA in Advertising Photography. While there, I also learned invaluable lessons shooting for local ad agencies. I was fortunate to land prestigious gigs fresh out of college working alongside industry superstars such as Annie Liebovitz, Bonnie Schiffman and Jay Silverman.

In my professional career, I’ve been lucky enough to photograph and help market all sorts of products: from consumer goods to home furnishings to famous and not so famous people. Working along-side art directors, I’ve created editorial, lifestyle and advertising images for websites, magazines, trade shows, catalogs, packaging and more.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My early and formal photographic training was entirely focused on analog film processes. I put my camera down to pursue work in the manufacturing and marketing sectors around the birth of digital imaging technology. When I returned to image making full time, it was a challenge to learn and embrace the digital environment and master new hardware and software capabilities. My early analog training centered around reading Kodak guides and Time-Life books, but I was now reliant on Adobe tutorials and YouTube videos. Fortunately, my cornerstones of photography; composition, lighting, design, and concept were still present.

LA Light Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
LA Light was created to help brokers, agents, developers, and designers better market their properties and build their brands. It was my belief that multi-million dollar homes deserved editorial / architectural quality imagery.

I’ve since found that my clients are thrilled to have exciting images to market their properties with and benefit long-term in attracting the attention of new clients.

I approach photographing homes just like photographing people…Identify the best qualities and traits, then emphasize those characteristics with light and composition. It’s actually quite a simple formula.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
In the past two years, I have helped bring over $975 Million dollars of property to market… I’ve had images reproduced in a handful of major publications. However, my proudest moments are the emotional responses from my clients, when they see the images we’ve created together.
