Meet Tim Prentiss and Sam Malloy of Moldy Records in West LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Prentiss and Sam Malloy.

Moldy Records started in Venice, California during the Summer of 2017. College friends Sam Malloy and Tim Prentiss reunited to become roommates in an old-school house near Venice Beach. Inspired by their surroundings and the thriving Dogtown culture, they warmed the hearts of their neighbors with late night music sessions after sunny days spent going to the beach and sipping craft beer.

At the time, Sam was working for The Village Studios and making music under the name Cyrus Temple with his bedroom doubling as a recording studio. Tim moved to Los Angeles with dreams of breaking into the entertainment industry. Their paths intertwined during this cosmic summer, leading to the formation of Moldy Records.

With Moldy Records, they saw an opportunity to revive the culture of the 60s. With an emphasis on vintage-cool, the record label seeks to embody an “Old, but New” style. The company promotes music for local artists who align with their vintage vibes and hosts showcases in the Los Angeles area. Notable artists who have performed at their events include Pacific Range and The Charities.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As first-time business owners, we have faced challenges that come with any new experience. These include hiccups like locking instruments in a car and having lawyers not return emails. We’ve navigated these obstacles with a “show must go on” mentality and maintained a close friendship.

What else should our readers know?
We’re really excited about the Moldy Records brand and how it conceptually applies to our mission. What makes us unique is we’re looking for artists that amplify the American countercultural movements that survive to this day.

What were you like growing up?
We were two kids born on opposite sides of the country. We both had hard-working families and normal interests like sports and girls. Our passion for music brought us together and continues to push us forward.
