Meet Tim & Pat Curran of Our City Coffee in Playa Vista

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim and Pat Curran.

Tim & Pat Curran are the founders of Our City Coffee (OurCityCoffee.com). Originally from Cleveland, OH Tim and Pat moved to Los Angeles around 4-5 years ago. For the last few years, they have been helping brands with video production, branding and marketing under their company Curran Media Co. (CurranMedia.Co). Brands started recognizing their talent and capabilities right away and they were able to work with major brands including USA Today, Cleveland Cavs, Train Magazine, UFC, AirAsia and even assisting with the World MMA Awards Show last year. After years of helping other brands in the digital space, the Curran’s decided it was time to launch their own brand (In walks Our City Coffee). After seeing other brands succeed and fail over the years, they formulated two key components for their brand they knew they could believe in and turn into a global brand. The two main goals of Our City Coffee are simple; deliver great coffee and give back. It sounds simple, but it’s much more than that. In fact, Our City Coffee’s tagline is More Than Coffee. Every bag of coffee beans sold online helps feed a kid here in LA! In addition to the premium coffee beans sold online, Our City Coffee is partnering with athletes and celebrities to provide experiences and opportunities to give back globally. Ever want to have a cup of coffee with your favorite celebrity? Our City Coffee is making that happen all while giving back to charity!

Has it been a smooth road?
There is no start-up in history that has had a completely smooth road to launch and growth. It just doesn’t happen. There will always be something that doesn’t go as planned, and it’s up to the founders to either solve it, adapt or give up. When we started Curran Media Co. we didn’t have any video background… Literally none. So we had to go sell our services with no prior examples, no clients and no experience. We had to rely on what we did know, US. We knew we could sell ourselves and in business, people like to do business with people they like. Fortunately, we found a few people who liked us. We built some amazing marketing promotions and videos that gave us a stepping stone to keep growing. With Our City Coffee, it’s a whole different animal. We are selling a physical product, so the roadblocks are different. The difference is with logistics like product, shipping, customer service, etc. When you want to start a company like this, you do it all too so it’s very time-consuming.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Curran Media Co. definitely started off with more of a sports and fitness focus. After all, it’s what we knew. We were former college athletes. We have got into other industries since, but I’d say we are known for the sports, health/fitness space. I’m extremely proud that we have been able to work with some of the big names we have and so fast after starting the company. There are many reasons that set us apart, but I think the ability to be creative, work fast and be fun to be around have been a few that keep coming up.

Our City Coffee is just getting started, but it’s been a super fun ride so far. Like we say, we’re more than coffee and I’m excited to launch some new things the remainder of the year. We’re doing things much different than any other coffee brand out there. Just wait and see…

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is a great place to start a business. There is a lot of action and opportunities. On the other hand, you can get chewed up and spat out if you’re not ready for it. I’d recommend finding a solid team that compliments your own expertise so you can give yourself the best chance to succeed. Many people have told me to start in a smaller city and then work your way up to a bigger city like LA. I’m not like many people though…
