Today, we’d like to introduce you to Tim Mathis.
Hi Tim, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started as a comedian in Houston in 2011 and moved out to LA after I was selected for the first season of Kevin Hart’s Hart of the City. I caught the acting bug after my first national commercial, but I still do stand-up across the country.
I am currently shopping for a frisbee golf script, “Mega Bowl,” with my writing partner, JD Belser. Also, I just produced a comedy special for my good friend Theo M.E. Taylor that will be available on Comedy Dynamics and hopefully a streaming service soon.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Most roads worth traveling aren’t always smooth. Anyone involved in the entertainment field knows it can be a slog with ups and downs.
I was homeless for a little while when I first moved to LA, but I landed a commercial and started getting gigs. The bottom line is if you really wanna do this type of thing, you can’t quit, can’t give up.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in comedy mainly, but I am trying to branch out into dramatic stuff as well. I started in radio in 2007 but got laid off and gave stand-up a try.
I was in Houston at the time and was able to learn from many very solid comics around the city, and eventually, Rudy Rush suggested me to Joey Wells, who was casting Hart of the City. My appearance on that really helped further my career and led to me moving out to LA in 2017.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
As I said before, don’t quit. If you’re a comic, you’re gonna bomb; if you’re acting, you’ll have bad auditions; it happens.
But you gotta be tough and just trust your ability, work hard, and listen to folks who are in whatever industry you wanna succeed in. Also, be nice, and don’t listen to your haters. People only hate folks that are doing better than they are. Just smile, keep your head down, and concentrate on your work.
Also, never stop learning. I thought I knew how to write a script until I talked to people who have actually sold a few. Like everything else, when you try a new venture, you have to stay humble and take advice from those more experienced. Don’t get frustrated with rejection cuz that’s gonna happen quite a bit. I mean, the script we are shopping now has advanced in every contest we entered.
The feedback we are getting is that it is very original, funny, and inexpensive to film, but it’s hard to even get a meeting. We still need a literary manager to help sell it or a producer to help get it made. Feel free to check out our website for more info. https://gatecrashersinc.com/.
