Meet Tim Lin of Grdian in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Lin.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After moving back from Brooklyn, where I was at for school, I took up an internship position at a visual effects company. During that time, I was faced with the question of what my next ten years would look like. I have always wanted to build something from the ground up and found this period of my life to be the perfect opportunity to take the leap of faith and start my own business. I spent the next month compiling as much information as I could get my hands on, contacted and visited potential suppliers, researched market trends, learned the entire logistics of the process, studied my competitors, and developed marketing strategies. I won’t go into too much detail, but everything people say about being an entrepreneur is true. It takes a lot of work, sacrifice, devotion, and acceptance of failure upon failure. You really have to develop a tough skin.

Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not. The road has been far from smooth. I am a firm believer that grit and what I call “itch” to be the key to success. Often times, the paths we take and the challenges we face take precedence of our achievements. In truth, it is our failures and how we overcome them that defines our success. The itch is the desire and the determination to prove the naysayers wrong. Some of the struggles I faced were on-going, such as: How do I increase my sales? How do I find new customers? Can I survive the month? What are my competitors up to? And how do I create a better life for my dog and my fiancée?

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the GRDIAN story. Tell us more about the business.
I started GRDIAN on January of 2016. We specialize in providing innovative security solutions for the everyday driver. Since our inception, we have produced three generations of dash cams with four different types of models. And are slated to develop another generation of cameras by the end of 2019.

GRDIAN was founded on the fundamental basis of sharing our passion for technology and innovation with the people around us. We share a common goal of building a customer-centric culture, which translates to putting our customers at the center of everything we do. By establishing direct relationships with our customers, we gain first-hand knowledge of how well our products are performing in real-world situations. When our customers provide us with positive feedback, it is the greatest feeling in the world.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
With the on-going trade war, things are a little bit in the cloud. However, in the next ten years, in addition to our dash cams, we are looking forward to expanding our product line with smart home security devices. In terms of growing and expanding, we hope to serve more customers by entering into the retail space.
