Meet Tiffany Doran of Don’t Forget the Sugar in Inglewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Doran.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Tiffany. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started baking when I was seven years old. I always knew it was what I wanted to do. My first official order cake from a high school friend of mine, and it took off from there. I was working full time, then coming home and baking all night. I ended up making it a full-time business out of my home in 2016, and have since acquired a building that I’m converting to a bakery.

I left my home in Palmdale and sent my boys to live with their dads until I get this business open and thriving. There have been major sacrifices made for this to happen, and I refuse to give up until it does.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I got the building, I was so happy to get the keys, that I didn’t consider all the work and money that would have to go into it. I have been looking for an investor for over a year, but with no luck. This building has been sitting, unfinished for two years. I have been grinding to keep this rent paid, and it’s been hard.

Please tell us about Don’t Forget the Sugar.
I am 190% self-taught. I specialize in custom cakes and desserts of all kinds. I can make anything you want into a cake, and my desserts are nothing like anyone else’s out here. I’m most proud of my growth and resilience. As a home baker, I’ve made several celebrity cakes, catered desserts for radio and tv stations, and appeared on Food Network 4 times.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When I was nine, my mom threw me a surprise bday party. I had a Michael Jackson impersonator, all my friends were there, and we had a Soul Train line at the end. My godfather made me this BEAUTIFUL cake. It was pink and purple and had jelly hearts on it. I’ll never forget it.
