Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiana Calloway.
Tiana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story really starts to gather its purpose my Senior Year of High School. I grew up wanting to study Forensic Science at NYU, but in my Senior Year of High School, I found out I was pregnant with my son. I completed my Senior Year of High School finishing in the top 10% of my class and decided to attend Cal State Dominguez Hills because I received an academic scholarship. I gave birth to my son the 2nd week of my Freshman Year, I took off a couple of days and jumped right back in, finishing my degree in Business Administration. While in college, I worked as an Admin Assistant for a company that sold office space to small and large businesses which is where I was first introduced to what exactly a Notary Public did and why Real Estate was essential to building wealth. My Manager pushed me to get my Notary Public Certification, I did and started my Traveling Notary and Loan Signing Business, then.
While in undergrad, I was very disciplined with my spending, saved my money and ten months after I graduated with my Bachelor’s at the age of 23, I purchased my first home. Shortly after I bought my home, I decided to go back to school; attending the MBA program at the University of Phoenix. While in grad school, I switched jobs a couple of times but eventually going back to selling office space to small and large businesses. After completing my program, I moved up in the company, going from General Manager to Area Manager. I worked there another two years before moving into Affordable Housing Development.
The entire time I was moving up in the corporate world, I was also running TCAL Notary and trying to purchase my 2nd home. In 2012, I finally decided to rent my 1st home and actively pursue purchasing a 2nd home for me and my son to live in. While I ended up becoming a Land Lord at the young age of 28, I struggled purchasing my 2nd home. I ended up renting an apartment while managing my rental property for the next three years, purchasing my 2nd home in 2016.
Over the years, I have worked for some of the largest Development Firms in Los Angeles. In 2015, I took on the role of Regional Property Supervisor with one if not the most reputable Affordable Housing Developers in Los Angeles. I spent three years managing a portfolio with a monthly rental revenue of over 17 million. I decided to leave that organization in 2018 in hopes of creating my own firm but ended up taking on a role as the Regional Director, Residential Property Management with the 2nd largest Development Firm in Los Angeles. I currently still work there and have since been promoted from Regional Director to Regional Vice President of Asset Management; managing over a billion dollars in assets. Real Estate has always been my passion. I have over ten years of Property Management and Real Estate Development experience with knowledge of Affordable Housing Development, Commercial Property Management and Mix-Use Development.
While working for these great organizations, I have also continued to work on my self. I’ve been a silent investor in a number of real estate deals, have consulted on a number of renovation projects including the 50K renovation of my personal home. Early this year, I decided to get my Real Estate License, finishing in March and launching my business in April, partnering with my Broker, Chase Skye Realty Group. I’ve spent many years trying to work my way up the corporate ladder, now I am trying to build my own.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Aside from working through being a teen mom with big goals, in 2018 I was diagnosed with Cancer. I went in for a routine check-up and a few weeks later, I found out I had a rare form of Sarcoma. Three procedures later, I am completely cancer-free.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I own two businesses: TCAL Notary and TCAL Realty.
TCAL Notary specialized in Loan Signings. In the last year, I’ve managed to build individual relationships with a number of Escrow Companies and am now their preferred Notary/Loan Signing Agent.
TCAL Realty focuses on First Time Home Buyers specifically in underserved communities. What set’s me apart is I understand what it take from all angles to purchase a home and anything I don’t understand, I have someone in my circle who does. I have partnered with Industry Professionals to be able to best service my clients. This Summer, I hosted my first event: First Time Home Buyer Seminar. It was a success. I am looking forward to hosting my next event in the near future.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was really inquisitive. Even now, I tend to ask a lot of questions. I liked to try new things, read new things…I was a bit of an explorer. I spent lots of time with my Mom who was in college most of my upbringing; she was probably the most influential.
