Meet Ericka Coulter of TheBasement Series in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ericka Coulter.

Ericka, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Where do I start… I moved to Los Angeles straight out of high school and hit the ground running. My journey is quite unique; went to college for fashion and ended up in music.

I got my first shot as an A&R in 2013 and have been fortunate enough to work with some of the most amazing artists throughout my career so far. I learned a lot and in that saw what was missing in the music industry, which led to me starting TheBasement in 2017.

What I realized was that there’s a need for helping artists gain real exposure & access to industry professionals, and not only in Los Angeles, but for the future of the culture. We have a responsibility to help the next wave of artists and creatives.

It’s so crazy to see this brand grow and receive the feedback it’s gotten. It’s priceless. For those who have attended TheBasement, I hope we/it left a mark and for those who haven’t – say tuned because TheBasement is hitting the road in 2019.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?

This is a hard one! I wouldn’t necessarily call it a “struggle,” but it’s been a process finding my purpose. I knew growing up that I wanted to be in music. Started off as a gospel singer then made it to LA thinking I was ready to be a superstar. But then, I had that talk with myself “am I going to go as hard as Beyoncé?” The answer was NO.

So, I slowly moved into songwriting then eventually felt a wanting to be the female version of Jimmy Iovine, [laughs]. Soon things started to make sense and I realized my purpose was to help artists; like A.CHAL, Lauren Sanderson and building a platform like TheBasement. At the end of the day the struggle was just the trailer to my featured film and it’s still being shot.

TheBasement Series – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
TheBasement concert series is a place to network, vibe and discover. Everything we do is done with the artist first in mind. The vibe is the most important part and that’s something you just can’t fake.

We are establishing ourselves as a brand & agency that’s here to stay. An event that’s necessary for executives to attend, brands to support and artists to want to be part of. Competition could never be an issue when the goal is to help artists. If anything, we should all work together.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is when you are doing something that makes you happy, with purpose and the right people recognize the hard work you that you’ve put in.
