Meet Terry Brown of BRISxLIFE

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terry Brown.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Terry. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I used to make music in Compton, CA. I wanted to learn how to make music videos and I needed a place to post my music. YouTube was the perfect place for me to do both. My rap name was kiddseven and I had a mixtape called BRISxLIFE. The “BRIS” part is an acronym, it means (The Best Revenge Is Success). I made another YouTube channel that had nothing to do with my music, I just wanted to be a Youtuber. I took the name of my mixtape and called my new channel BRISxLIFE. One day I was on the trending page on YouTube and seen a group called BTS featured in the #1 spot with a song they just released called DNA. Something about the thumbnail of the video made want to click on the video. I did a reaction video to their music video and it was so different yet still had a lot of familiar elements to Hip Hop and R&B in it. By the end of the video, I was hooked. I fell into the preverbal K-POP rabbit hole and along the journey grew an amazing community I call the BRISxGANG, they are really “the most lit!” My YouTube channel was taking off and because of that to this day, I have had some amazing opportunities, like meeting Jeon Jungkook of BTS!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I come from a totally different culture than the K-POP community at the time I started reacting to K-POP music in 2017. People from my culture couldn’t understand why I like it and people from the K-POP community either were confused to why I like it or just didn’t believe I did because of where I was from and what I looked like. I would get comments like “a straight black dude from Compton likes K-POP, yea right.” I would put “Black Guy reacts” in my video titles back then because I didn’t see a lot of people that look like me with the same background that like K-POP. Now in 2020, there is a lot of black people you can visually see that like K-POP. I like to think I had a little something to do with that.

Please tell us about BRISxLIFE.
BRISxLIFE youtube channel is the fastest-growing K-POP channel on Youtube. Terry’s unique perspective, hype reactions, travel vlogs and exclusive interviews has produced over 180 million views just over two years. Terry aka BRIS has worked with K-POP idols like Jackson Wang from GOT7, ATEEZ, A.C.E, LOONA, Jessi and many more from the K-POP music industry. Bris was chosen to give a “Fans Choice” award to BTS at Mnet Asian Music Awards in 2018. BRIS also has a podcast with Co-Host Dezzy March called ‘BRIZZY TALK”.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Staying driven and consistent in putting out content is a big part of it. It helps that I love the K- Industry so a lot of it doesn’t feel like work… except all the editing I do for the videos lol I hate that.
