Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa Rodriguez.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’m a photographer from Castaic, California. I’m 36 years old. I graduated from The Art Institute with an associates in digital photography. I’ve been married for 13 years and have three children. At the moment I do freelance photography which includes events, private photoshoots, and a little bit of street photography. But my passion is documentary photography.
Please tell us about your art.
My documentary art consists of mostly cultural portraiture. I am Mexican-American and I feel that my culture is one of many that are either appreciated or appropriated. I like taking candid photos. But I also like taking images that can relate to people and make you think. I have the tendency to take a few shock photos to provoke thought and emotions. Sometimes it’s rewarding, and other times I have to deal with the backlash.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
Yes, I do. I think that today the worse in people’s character is becoming more public. I think it’s sad that being a minority, we are looked down more frequently than those that are not. We don’t have a voice to speak up and say, enough. It has affected my art I think for the better. I show what my people are really like and in some cases, I’ll do it sarcastically to get a rise out of you.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have two Instagram accounts. My documentary account is under the handle, @photorebel82, and my business/street account is @photography_by_tere.
The best way to show me your support is to follow both accounts, comment on my photos and obviously sharing my work. But as long as I get a heads up first.
