Today we’d like to introduce you to Terah Tidy.
Terah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started out as a hairdresser and quickly became an educator and product developer for Sebastian International, the hair care and beauty company. Working closely with the company owner and creative director, I helped create some of the company’s most renowned products. As an educator, I traveled the world, which became an education for me as well.
When the company was sold to a conglomerate, I went back out on my own and began to pursue a passion I had developed for natural and essential body oils. I created Madflowers, my signature line of body indulgences, featuring the oils I discovered on my travels. Shortly after that, I fulfilled my dream of having my own beauty lounge in my chosen home town of Malibu. Much more than a traditional salon, it is becoming a destination for art, fashion, beauty, and wellness. I call it Glamifornia Style Lounge, and it is the definition of BeauCoup Chic. I have a number of talented artists who work with me. In addition to offering cuts, color and style, the Lounge also offers makeup, lash extensions and lash lifts, spray tans, First Friday events for consumers, and education for beauty professionals.
The Glamifornia Style Lounge is located in the old Malibu Courthouse. Part of our space includes the old jail cell. Who knows who might have been temporarily incarcerated there? What I do know is that all are welcome to “come for the style; stay for the lounge.”
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Getting a new business up and running is always challenging. It took some time, obviously, to find the perfect space, secure an affordable lease, and create a space that appeals to people. And then the real work began! Something that’s brand new, in a place like Malibu and Southern California, has a tremendous amount of competition. After all, this is the beauty and style capital of the West and maybe even the country. Marketing and advertising don’t come as easily to me as education and beauty do. It’s been a journey for sure, but I wouldn’t change a thing.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Glamifornia Style Lounge – what should we know?
Glamifornia is a merging of glamour and California. I’ve used it for years to help educate other beauty professionals by using photography, music, fashion design, and more to initiate a collaboration inside a collaborative environment. I’ve brought that philosophy into the Style Lounge. We’re not just a beauty salon; we’re an art movement that happens to provide beauty salon services and so much more.
The space is unique, because of its location in the old Malibu Courthouse. I believe the history of the building contributes to helping us make history every day.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I always credit my family, especially my two kids. They have been an inspiration to me since the day they were born, and now that they’re starting to make their way in the world as adults, I am in awe of them every day.
Geri Cusenza, who co-founded Sebastian International, was always a mentor to me and remains one to this day.
My friends have always been supportive as well. I have found, too, that so many of the people I worked with throughout the years remain people who I trust, and who continue to help me as I build my business. I know it’s a cliché, but it really does take a village. And I am grateful for them all.
