Meet Taylor Owen of TailorMade Productions in South Central

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Owen.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started getting into engineering and production in my junior year of high school. Once I realized that that is what I wanted to do, I applied for Musician’s Institute in Hollywood. I got accepted into the Independent Artists Program wherein six months, I learned how to use Logic Pro and how to engineer myself.

After I graduated, I stayed in LA for another three months when, due to bad life choices, became homeless. I was couch surfing for the last three months, when my mom who was coming to visit anyway, took me back to Iowa. While I was there, I then applied for another school, McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul Minnesota. There I learned everything I could about recording, mixing, and mastering. A month before I would walk for my Bachelor’s, the school closed and kicked every student out in six days.

Luckily I still got my degree. I was forced to move back home where I stayed for another six months. I was working two jobs and not really enjoying my life. One day at work, I just decided that I didn’t want to be there anymore, so I got in contact with some people in LA who needed a roommate. I told my mom at four in the morning that I was leaving in two weeks, and she just looked at me and said, “Okay, good.” In just two weeks, I was there. I only had enough money for the first month’s rent so when I got there, I decided I’m not doing anything until I find a job in my field. That is until my roommate’s friend came over to go out. She was and still is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. We are now engaged and have a beautiful baby girl. I applied for a place called Union Recording Studios, where I applied, interviewed and got the job in just one week. Since then, I have worked with thousands of artists, where I have learned to zero in on my craft and created my TailorMade Sound.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course not, my family never had a lot of money and had to settle for a lot of things. The homeless part of my life, even though it was short, really put things into perspective.

Please tell us about TailorMade Productions.
TailorMade Productions is a recording and production studio focusing on Hip Hop, RnB and Pop music. The clients that will be coming. To my studio will leave with a very unique sound, tailored to their specific needs and music. I started this company by myself, I’m still in the early process of opening it up, but hopefully by the end of the year it will be open for business.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Absolutely nothing. Although some things I regret, it made me into who I am today. I wouldn’t change anything.
