Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatiana Turan.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
At the age of four, I had my first ballet class in preschool and I was hooked. I continued dancing through elementary, high school and college, performing in classical ballets and many musical theater productions. Acting was another huge passion of mine, so after receiving my BA in Theater from the University of California, Irvine, I moved back to Los Angeles to pursue my career as an actor & dancer.
The dance jobs were easier to book and more readily available. I found myself working consistently as a dancer for live events, touring stage shows, and casino productions. While working for other entertainment companies, I learned a lot about the event entertainment world. I also started choreographing for many of these companies.
Soon, I was being asked to produce these shows (supply the costuming, come up with the concept, etc..). After years of choreographing for others, I woke up one morning (usually how big ideas come to me – after a good night’s sleep!) knowing that I should start my own company. It was as easy as that! There was no deliberating over it, no fearing the risks of it. Just a strong knowing that it was what I needed to do.
So, in 2008, I started investing into costumes (my first set of four showgirl costumes – I still have them today!!), I came up with my company name and bought my URL. I have always been this way when it comes to building something new. I almost always listen to my gut (it’s when I don’t that I get into trouble), and when I feel that it’s steering me in the right direction, I don’t question it.
My husband jokes that I am the “build-it-and-they-will-come gal.” I am grateful for that! It’s been ten years and counting! Lots of hard work, learning as I go, dealing with dancers and clients, and all the other stuff that comes along with it. I started out as a performer, turned choreographer, turned business owner. I did not go to business school or take managerial courses, so lots of this has been trial and error.
I mainly started my company for more work opportunities for myself and my performer friends. So I had no guidebook, and no one helping me figure it out. But all the while I was succeeding at securing contracts, keeping clients (many repeat) very happy and producing some great shows! I am grateful I had the stamina and organizational skills to deal with the hurdles along the way.
I am grateful that I continue to do so to this day. Happy to say, my costume list has grown from 4 showgirl sets, to a shed full of them, and now to a storage unit full of them. And many props added along the way! Today, Bling Divas is one of Southern California’s leading entertainment companies offering premium event entertainment – from all styles of dance to actors, to candy girls, to models, to living props, to fully produced shows!
We service events, nightclubs, casinos, tv & film. We have had a long-running show at the beautiful Edison in downtown LA. Every Saturday night for the last seven years, our vintage cabaret/burlesque show is at this historic spot in the Arts District, where we are known as The Eddies. I hope we get to continue this wonderful journey!
We have been seen in music videos, television shows, commercials and even at the LA Coliseum in front of 50 thousand people for a K-Pop opening! Coachella’s Main Stage performance with Saint Motel was another highlight, and of course, all the other stages around the west coast. We are grateful for all of these opportunities and look forward to many more to come.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t always been smooth. As anything worth having, you have to work hard and learn from your mistakes. There are ups and downs, and I’ve had some major hurdles to jump along the way. But I have persevered and made my company stronger from them.
The entertainment industry is up and down. There are no guarantees, and you don’t always know when your next “gig” is going to show up. But fortunately, it’s been mainly consistent, with some scarier/scarcer months here and there. It’s just learning to ride those waves, and have faith!
Please tell us about Bling Divas Entertainment.
Bling Divas provides premium entertainment for corporate events, private parties, VIP red carpet affairs, casino productions, and commercial/tv work. From dancers to actors, to candy girls, to strolling champagne skirts and strolling tables, we have it all!
We specialize in everything vintage! We have our vintage pinup show, a fun, flirty throwback to the USO shows from the 40’s. We’ve appeared at the Queen Mary for their annual July 4th celebration, as well as their winter holiday run called, CHILL as one of their headlining groups.
We have our vintage candy girls who have walked red carpets for many a movie & tv premiere here in Hollywood (Gangster Squad, Mob City, Boardwalk Empire). A fun novelty type element to have at any vintage themed event.
I am proud to still be around for a decade and running! But I am very proud to have had seven of those ten years at the world-renowned, Edison in DTLA. From one single corporate holiday party at this bar, to then being put on as a weekly running show has been a dream, and something I do not take for granted. I know how rare this opportunity is, and I am both proud and honored to be a part of their amazing lineup!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I know it sounds cliche, but I don’t know that I would’ve done anything differently. Even the challenges have been gifts. I, of course, don’t like them as I’m going through them! But they have taught me invaluable lessons and have forced me to make my company stronger and more “armed”. There is nothing like OJT (on-the-job training)!
