Meet Tarzana Fitness Trainer: Allison Truscheit of Crossfit Synapse

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Truscheit.

Allison, please tell us about Synapse.
Synapse is not just about the experience inside the gym. Synapse was started with a goal of improving each member’s life outside the gym, allowing them to become more capable humans and experience as much of life as possible without pain, restriction of movement, or mental barriers. It was also founded with the idea that every single person who walks through the doors matters; their story matters, because that’s what they’re working for. This attitude has created a vibrant and diverse community, who loves learning, about movement and each other.

Has it been a smooth road?
We’ve always been interested in organic growth; we don’t have a revolving door of clientele. We’re not interested in people coming in once a week for a few months. We’re interested in developing long-term relationships with people who make our classes a regular part of their lives. This means our growth has always been a little bit slower, but it pays off in the clients we do have, who end up staying a part of our lives for years. We’re also not interested in fads or quick fixes; our solutions are long term strength and conditioning training for long term health and happiness!

What are your plans for the future?
We are working hard right now on our new program The Gymnast Method- our adult gymnastics class focused on gymnastics conditioning and basic skills- it’s a super fun class with skill and strength goals for our students- it’s doing a lot of the conditioning the Olympians are doing…without the crazy difficult skills!

We also have the Syn-lympics coming up in August to celebrate our 5 year anniversary and Rio2016! It will be an In-house competition incorporating fun versions of many Olympic sports.

Let’s dig a little deeper into your story.  What was the hardest time you’ve had?

As far as hardships, I honestly think that most of my own personal hardships happened BEFORE CrossFit. After I quit gymnastics, I let go of a lot of my goals, and became unfocused, undisciplined, and uninspired. I gained a lot of weight. CrossFit really changed my life, gave me perspective, accomplishments I could feel proud of, and a purpose- to share that with others. I think our gym is different in that we fully recognize the whole person- who we are in the gym is who we are outside the gym- and that truly matters.

We talk a lot about the importance of community in reference to mental health, especially now, in this society. Our members are forced to be present for a full hour, without phones, having true and honest interactions with each other, and finding and pushing against their physical limits. You learn so much about yourself in those moments, and your neighbors. You rely on them for support and in turn, you encourage them. It’s an exchange of energy that can’t happen through a text message. It’s real, and sometimes intimate. This place is a family, and that connection is not only nourishing to the soul, but it stays with you outside these doors. That is why the Crossfit experience is life changing.
